For the pro's - how do you evaluate late cancelation hunts and openings that are discounted? Do you target an area or an outfitter or keep all options open?

What are the pitfalls and warning flags?

Excellent thread! Here is how I see it:
1. Have I secured vacation weeks with the ability to be used when I want? Yes!
2. Do I have the money ready to take advantage? Yes!
3. As I do with every hunt, if I do not know the outfitter I quickly ask our great forum for references…if good I pounce!!!

While not exactly in your original question, I want to know WHY there is a cancelation available. If it's a leopard tag, it may be someone was unsuccessful before you. That causes red flags for me. Also, some outfitters never met a tag they didn't try to sell, such as an elephant hunt late season when the elephants have moved to greener pastures. Many cancelation hunts are due to clients unable to go, so I would want to know how much the deposit/ discount is. I have gone on late/ cancelation hunts in the past, just need to do much more research before booking or go with an outfitter you already know and trust.

I’ve done 2 late season hunts where I took advantage of end of season specials. I also did one short notice hunt where an unexpected tag was issued. I keep saying I’m going to keep my schedule open and look for end of season deals but I like to plan. You need to have a good understanding of areas to recognize what’s a deal and what isn’t if you need to decide on short notice. There are a lot of areas I wouldn’t waste my time in regardless of how good the deal is. I’d stick to well known recognized areas and recognized outfitters unless you’ve hunted with them before. You also need to be flexible because a lot plains game quota can already be used up. Late season leopard hunts I’d be very cautious of. There’s a reason they are being offered. It was a difficult hunt during the best dates. It will be more difficult later in the season.
Some of the best offers I’ve seen have been in Caprivi. I’ve seen very good deals in Zambia as well. Some of the late season Zimbabwe deals I’d be more cautious of. There’s a reason buffalo quota is still available in marginal areas.

Great insight. Thank you

I don’t have the resources a lot of hunters have but have enough to hunt on a budget. To reach my hunting goals, I simple can’t pay regular price for hunts especially now days. Almost all my hunts are cancellation hunts or last minute deals. I’ve made a professional career doing this type of hunting. I look for a PH and outfitters starting out that are usually eager and work hard. I also kept in contact with a lot of outfits in hopes of getting a cancellation hunt at the last minute. I do my research on them for sure and have had great success doing this type of hunts. I have only gotten burned just once and almost another time but I have saved a lot and had a blast along the way.

I would probably only do a last-minute hunt with an outfit I had previously vetted, so to speak. If I know the outfit and see something of interest, then I might be persuaded to go. I'm a notorious planner by nature, and last-minute deals always make me nervous in a general sense. I think the more expensive the hunt, the more nervous I get ;).

I will say there appear to be a few outfits that use these "deals" as a marketing scheme to attract clients. Over the years, they seemingly have an endless supply of "cancellation hunts" available, usually around late Spring.

Yes there is some logic and truth to what you say.

Sometimes it's funny to see the "cancellation hunt" offered just AFTER the yearly shows in America where they might not of booked as may hints as they hoped.

Generally most of these offers seem to come out July-October. For end of year. Left over quota or no ones booking hot end of season hunts if they have their choice.

Over the years there has been many many hunts offered by reputable outfits I could have saved a ton on. If ready and willing. Search is a great function on here and other sites and you can see who yearly may have hunts that open up.

And same for reports. I've read many reports that users will post saying they took the end of season deal and for the most part the hunts work up just great or normal.

Late season leopard hunts are a tough proposition. It’s hot, young of the year have dropped, baits rot fast. Way too many hunters go 3-4-5 times before shooting a leopard and going late is one way to have a difficult time. I’d be very careful in considering ANY late leopard hunt.

I’m not a guy that really looks for “cheap”, but if you can inherit a meaningful deposit due to a cancellation, and benefit the outfitter by becoming the paying customer, why not.

I just did my first plains game safari, could have only taken a carry on and my gun. I’m entering a season in life where last minute is way more doable, I could pack and be out the door in a couple hours honestly.
I’m looking forward to watching these cancellations, like the one Ranchero just put up. Especially if one isn’t too picky on flights, and can raw dog economy, seems like a guy could get some good discount, surprise fun.
Point well taken on leopard, and probably other specialty hunts. I suppose a guy could ask for DMs re a late season hunt, and get the best possible feedback available, without publicly making the hunt tough for the outfitter to sell if it was borderline.
How long is a 4457 good for? Can a 5320 be location but not date specific? A guy could really prepare to be out the door at a moments notice.

For US customs a 4457 has no expiration date. It’s simply proof you owned an item before leaving the US. Outside the US it’s treated as a US firearms license. Some countries don’t care how old it is. Some countries like South Africa want it signed within a year of your trip or same year. It depends. I have no idea what a 5320 is?

Something I will add to my answer based on yours. I’d be very cautious taking a last minute offer from a South African for a hunt in a foreign country. They cannot be a PH in Zimbabwe or certain other countries. They are only acting as an accompanying agent. A few represent good areas. Most are representing very marginal areas because that outfitter/PH needs assistance marketing those hunts.

My first Namibia safari was a cancelled hunt. The first depositor put his first money in two years ahead, made a second deposit on year two and canceled when his final day rate payment was due. I went in in the dark and it worked out, fortunately.

Before I sent any money I researched him with guys I knew, here on the forums, and called his references (which he gladly surrendered a list of). It only took a few days before I wired my money.

I’m 1/1 so far. Now that I’ve been active on this site I feel that there is so much more experienced guys than me to ask questions of and so many respected outfitters and PH’s sponsoring this site that, this place is like an insurance policy that pays out with no premium due or expected.

375Fox, Excellent advice, agree and understand. I was more talking about the plains game option he offered, I think if I do elephant it will be normal route.
Never would have thought I would really consider elephant, until I was along on a buffalo. I’ve got the bug, bad…
5320 was for supressor, but talking to customs guy, sounds like tax stamp is really all that is needed.
Not doing any cancellations next couple years, plate is already full. I figure it’s worth watching and learning vicariously thru others in the meantime.

I've not done this specifically for Africa..

I keep a list of hunts and outfitters I'm ready to go with, about 12. I keep a relationship with them and talk to them 2-3 times a year if possible and make sure they know what I want to do and how much I'm willing to pay. I'm not trying to take advantage of them and ensure to let them know that. I'm also strongly conveying if we can work it out I can be anywhere in 36 hrs...

I think this will be my strategy as well. I like knowing before going.

I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
