Those Ruger bush rifles are a great setup, I was literally having a guide gun built into a 35 whelen the day they were announced online.This year it will either be;
Winchester mod 70 470 Capstick and Winchester mod 70 Stainless 375 H&H
Or the
Chapuis Elon 470 Nitro and Winchester mod 70 Stainless 375 H&h
Or the
Dakota 76 416 Remington mag and Remington mod 700 358 Norma mag!
But the Ruger Alaskan Bush rifle in 9.3x62 might warm it's way into my heart!
I know I need to decide very soon as we are wheels up June 1st!
Take the .300, because distances always become longer you expected.I suppose, if I should ever make it to Africa, I will take my newly acquired 404J for my Buff and either my 35 Whelen or 300 H&H for plains game.
He did indeed. They are nice to shoot and are very accurate when an appropriate load is found. The second darker target was with the 458 LottProctor made some excellent rifles....
Olivier -- how do you find the Tikka CTR for hunting? I bought one in .308 as well 2.5 years ago and I love it, but haven't carried it around much and haven't hunted with it. Mine weighs in at 4.2 kg with a 1-8 power scope. A bit heavy for sure by the numbers. I haven't been to Africa so not sure how much of an issue this would be.My choice is a classic setup to cover everything with two weapons
- Tikka CTR 308 Win March 1.5-15x42
- Blaser R8 375 H&H Kahles K16i 1-6x24

BUT…one of these days I want to take this custom Mauser G33/40 in 280 Ackley built by Bill Dowtin. I bought it with intents of using it for plainsgame, but I just don’t target plainsgame enough to need a dedicated rifle and have a hard time leaving my Rigby at home.
Ill claim ugliest 280 aiThat 280 ackley is making mine hide in shame! Absolutely beautiful figure!

Around 9 pounds / 4.1 kgr is the sweet spot for a hunting rifle—heavy enough to shoot well, light enough to carry all day—while 10 pounds 4.5kgr is the maximum acceptable weight unless there is a specific reason for more.Olivier -- how do you find the Tikka CTR for hunting? Many thanks for the field report. It is a great rifle!Around 9 pounds / 4.1 kgr is the sweet spot for a hunting rifle—heavy enough to shoot well, light enough to carry all day—while 10 pounds 4.5kgr is the maximum acceptable weight unless there is a specific reason for more.
I mainly use mine for chamois hunting, so I carry it all day long: one tip is to fit the rifle with a wide, flexible sling to prevent it from weighing too heavily on your shoulder. Once you’re in the thick of the hunt, you’ll completely forget about the weight and appreciate the rifle’s balance and mass, which help stabilize your shot.
