2 rifle Battery. Please Share Yours

Oberndorf Mauser actioned .35 Whelen on top, Interarms Whitworth in .458 Lott on bottom. I am a classic walnut stocked gun guy, but these have a special place for me. The Lott is a ton of fun to shoot.

I’ll put some pictures together of a pair of walnut guns later

This year it will either be;
Winchester mod 70 470 Capstick and Winchester mod 70 Stainless 375 H&H
Or the
Chapuis Elon 470 Nitro and Winchester mod 70 Stainless 375 H&h
Or the
Dakota 76 416 Remington mag and Remington mod 700 358 Norma mag!
But the Ruger Alaskan Bush rifle in 9.3x62 might warm it's way into my heart!

I know I need to decide very soon as we are wheels up June 1st!
Those Ruger bush rifles are a great setup, I was literally having a guide gun built into a 35 whelen the day they were announced online.
Got one on order that day and will become my go to here in the states.
But i already had the African model so i feel I owe it that much to go the first time!

CZ550 in .375 H&H and CZ 557 in .30-06.

Hadn't shot either one in more than a year due to health and surgery. Took the '06 out Saturday and rang a 6 inch gong 15 times straight at 235 yards. Will try with the .375 in a couple of weeks.

I suppose, if I should ever make it to Africa, I will take my newly acquired 404J for my Buff and either my 35 Whelen or 300 H&H for plains game.
Take the .300, because distances always become longer you expected.
If not, the .300 also makes the close shot.

Proctor made some excellent rifles....
He did indeed. They are nice to shoot and are very accurate when an appropriate load is found. The second darker target was with the 458 Lott

My choice is a classic setup to cover everything with two weapons
- Tikka CTR 308 Win March 1.5-15x42
- Blaser R8 375 H&H Kahles K16i 1-6x24
Olivier -- how do you find the Tikka CTR for hunting? I bought one in .308 as well 2.5 years ago and I love it, but haven't carried it around much and haven't hunted with it. Mine weighs in at 4.2 kg with a 1-8 power scope. A bit heavy for sure by the numbers. I haven't been to Africa so not sure how much of an issue this would be.

I am going to amend my post and take a 7mm Rem Mag Tikka for the plains game, with a 3-15x56 Leica scope. Overall weight is still very manageable. All rifles will have slings.

That 280 ackley is making mine hide in shame! Absolutely beautiful figure!
Ill claim ugliest 280 ai :)

Savage 280 ai ultralight - well patina'd from a mountain goat hunt in alaska

Cz550 416 rigby - loaded first 6 rounds for it - so I am an expert haha j/k

Those would be the two.... but i would take a 3rd. 405 winchester 1895, cause I want to pretend to be TR roaming old africa.

Around 9 pounds / 4.1 kgr is the sweet spot for a hunting rifle—heavy enough to shoot well, light enough to carry all day—while 10 pounds 4.5kgr is the maximum acceptable weight unless there is a specific reason for more.

I mainly use mine for chamois hunting, so I carry it all day long: one tip is to fit the rifle with a wide, flexible sling to prevent it from weighing too heavily on your shoulder. Once you’re in the thick of the hunt, you’ll completely forget about the weight and appreciate the rifle’s balance and mass, which help stabilize your shot.

I carried 9 1/2 pounds to 10 1/2 pounds for years. Now, at 76, I kinda like an 8 1/2 pound Model 86/71 I just came into possession of a couple years ago. Nice rifle for carry now. Elk and deer, about all I can hunt now.

Many thanks for the field report. It is a great rifle!

"Something old, something new:" For anything up to and including Kudu, I'm absolutely confident in my Browning X-Bolt Speed 2, chambered in 6.8 Western. It has never seen a target animal take a single step. For Eland, Buffalo, and Giraffe (because I'm just not interested in any others Jumbos) my C. Sharps NM1875, chambered in .50 Alaskan, loaded with a 570 gr DGX matches the .458 Win Mag for energy. Might even exceed it a little bit for THUMP on the back end. Its stock is carved from a walnut tree I used to climb in on my grandfather's farm, felled by lightning many years ago, and left in the field to rot until I helped myself to a log several years back. I do not regret that little expedition in the least!

Thats quite a board you've got on that M75.
Years ago AA handloading book had loading data for all the Sharps ctgs. IIRC, there was data for the .50 3 1/4" with 500gr. to 2,100fps using AA1300 powder, or some similar powder number as well as donething over 100gr. of IMR4831.
Those loads were listed for all the newly made "replica" Sharps rifles.
In my own Shiloh m74 I used IMR3031 with a 550gr. RCBS bullet at 1,650fps. That kicked quite hard enough with the Neidner checkered steel butt plate. The Shiloh had the large BP firing pin, not suitable for heavier loads.

Still possible to order one of these?

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
