6.5x284 for pg

Must have been 140? The only 160s I know of out there for 6.5 are Sierra, Hornady, and Woodleigh. Lapua and Norma have the 155s.

140 should be good though. The Nosler Partition also works well at these velocities if the Swift is hard to come by.
Sorry. My error. Thank you for catching that. 140s for sure

I used the Lapua 155's with great success

Before I went to Africa, I got lots of advice that my 6.5 prc was insufficient, and the 140 VLD’s would be a mistake. Was told that African animals are just built different. Much tougher than American deer, elk and antelope. 10 shots and 10 animals later, including eland, kudu, sable, gemsbuck, wildebeest and zebra, I would have no hesitation recommending your 6.5x284 for Africa. None of my animals made it more than about 100 yards and most less than 30. And the animals didn’t seem any tougher than the elk, moose and deer I’ve killed with the same rifle.

I’ve taken gemsbuck and blue wildebeest, along with several springboks and impalas with a 6.5 Creedmoor using 120 grain TTSX. The gun I typically take is my .308 and use 180 grain Swift Aframes.

The 6.5x284 is adequate, but bullet selection becomes more important. An expanding bullet that won't come apart in the animal should be avoided. You have many great choices, but with the 6.5x284 basically being the ballistic twin of the 300 win mag, go with one of the Swift bullets like the A-frame, or the Barnes. NOT the Hornady ELD-X.

* Berger 156 gr Elite Hunter IS the most accurate (long range, best BC nearly highest SD) hunting bullet in 6.5. 1st 3 shots (6.5-300 Wby) in same hole. They are LONG bullets, and as a result eat up powder space (3,050 fps, but that's all you need for long range performance w/ that BC). I've also used the 140s (3,150 fps in the WSM case out to 850 yds on targets and 720 on Aoudads. Once, there were 2 whoppers at 430 yards up a cliff. Shot the 1st, handed the gun over to my Son and he bagged the second about 10 seconds later-super accurate every time)-same result, but the 156 is an even better penetrator and (splitting hairs, but) is 1,000 yd capable. NOT necessary in Africa, but will definitely do the trick, and recommended for the -284 variant, too! The Nos 140 PT is calling the 6.5-284 for PG in Africa (accurate to 400-450 yds if you keep the points protected. use the boogered ones for short shots or follow-ups-i.e. <150 yds). GL!

What cartridge on the ELDX buffalo? Please don't say needmore! lol

I used the ELDX with success in a 6.5 Creedmoor on Black Wildebeest and smaller.

I shot a whitetail last fall with an ELDX, but from a 28 Nosler at 150 yards. Speed was likely around 3060 at impact. The bullet went in behind the shoulder, exploded and didn't make it to the far shoulder. Deer jumped and ran off, one drop of blood and he was piled up about 70 yards away with soup for insides. He was dead, but I think I would pick something stronger if I were to use that rifle at that distance/velocity again.

If I were you, I would take the 375 as others have mentioned. Plus, it’s more class for an African hunt, and that’s half the battle.

First, talk to your PH. Most of the ones I've met would prefer a .308 Win to a 6.5xanything. That's not to say the 6.5 wouldn't work. It absolutely would, but if something happens, it's likely your rifle will be blamed.

If your PH is OK with the 6.5x284, I'd absolutely go with better bullets. Try I'd go with either the 100 gr or 120 gr Barnes TTSX, assuming your rifle likes them. Barnes do best when driven fast. Swift A-frames are also good, if you can locate them. Hammers are a good option if you reload. CEB makes some great bullets too - the new kid on the block, but very effective. Nosler partitions are OK, but they often don't shoot that well for me. A bit soft in the nose, and that makes for lost table fare if you hit something hard.

Wildebeest, zebra, and gemsbok can be tough. Pound-for-pound more than elk, I'd say, and elk can go many miles on one lung or with half a liver. A .30-06 for PG will make any African PH smile.

Your ability to put any bullet in the right place trumps all of this. That should go without saying. On the shoulder, not behind it. Below the midline of the body, not above it. It's a bit different than whitetail.

I agree I shot a buck at 100 yards 1/4 away. Bullet exploded on impact. Looked like an exit wound. Yes he died but not happy with the result at all.

Our first trip to Africa I brought a rifle chambered I. 6.5 PRC and 375 Ruger. My kids used the 6.5 PRC and got one shot kills on everything including blue Wildebeest. We used 130 gr CX factory loaded ammo in the PRC and it worked awesome.

In my 375 Ruger I used hand loaded 270 gr TSX at 2800 fps and it performed great on everything including Cape Buffalo. The PH said he would have preferred 300 gr TSX but the Barnes thrive on speed and the 270 gr TSX gave me better accuracy, 200 fps gain in velocity, lower recoil, flatter trajectory, and the same or more energy at all ranges.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Good day, Slider.

Do you by any chance have any 500NE brass left that you are willing to part ways with?

Best regards,
Boela Bekker.
