Hunting reports

Was wiping down a safe this morning and came across this one. Picked this up years ago in a debt collection. Firing pin was broken and could never find one. Had Nathaniel Myers build me one, but I have never shot it. Suppose I should move it, but it’s just so darn cool. Has the look of an African big bore to me. Vektor Lyttleton. South African. Prior to Musgrave, I believe.

Beautiful rifle!

Lytellton is post-Musgrave.

The Musgrave factory in Bloemfontein closed in the very early 90’s.
Production then moved to Lyteltton Engineering Works in Pretoria.
Due to their military production, they kind of stopped building the hunting rifles.

In 2009, the Musgrave name and all the old, unused actions were bought by a gentleman called Frik du Plooy and production was moved to a town called Ermelo.

I have a “modern” Ermelo made 300H&H and it’s a wonderful rifle!
Your rifle is 10/1 built on a Santa Barbara or VZ 24 action.

Here in SA, the old Bloemfontein Musgrave rifles are considered as THE REAL Musgrave’s.
The same guys that believe that also forget that Winchester changed hands a few times before the pre-64 Model 70 was released.:ROFLMAO:

Don’t bother working up a load for that rifle, unless you want your other 30-06’s to rust in the safe.

Here is the link to the Musgrave website. There’s a page regarding the history.

BTW: Musgrave is one of the very few, if not the only rifle manufacturer in the world that still chamber production rifles in 300H&H.

Thanks for all the good info!

Never fear, help is always near. Should the horrible burden of owning such a rifle become to much for you to bear, I'm quite sure your friends here at AH could scrape together a few dollars and ease your pains.

Locally, those rifles go for between $800.00 and $1200.00
In that condition, it would be at the higher end.

Over the years, there have been numerous models of Musgrave / Vektor rifles, but one thing they all have in common are exceptional button pulled barrels.

Dang I feel so sorry for you and that old gun, gettin all jammed up and dented in that crowed safe, I have a lot of room in my house I dont even use a safe, love too see mine anytime I walk by, Can I help you with storage?:P Cheerleader:

I go through Ermelo fairly often. Is there a storefront or office there?

It says something about the quality of these rifles that there are none for sale on GI! Nice!

Yes there is...

They're produced on the same premises as the Wildman shop in Ermelo.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
