Ethiopian Airlines - Anxiety in Addis Abada

Actually the camp rifles were crap ! At least Hendrick has bought 3 Steyr rifles in 30-06 as of last year. Might visit him again this year.
That's a bummer. Yeah I used his Steyr. Nice weapons, they do what they are supposed to do.

I'll definitely will go back but next couple years some other (hunting) priorities before revisiting Hendrik.

Say hi for me when visiting them.

Other thing regarding the fees. Flying Brussel airlines this year. 600 euros for two firearms for a retour ticket to Senegal. Almost the same costs as the ticket. The Lufthansa Group is milking their hunting customers.

My travel agent mentioned that it can be a bit hectic in ADD but they will instruct me what to do and say. They routinely send people on my travel plan. 2 hour layover later this year on my way to first Africa hunt. Even the flying will be exciting I suppose, haha.

Sadly, the connection from Atlanta there is only 55 minutes

Where will you hunt be? Namibia?

A great, you will love it. Which region will you be hunting and what species are you after?

I've visited Namibia in November of 24 had a blast.

Not sure on the region's name, south-east of Windhoek as I understand it.
I'll have Kudu, Oryx, Impala, Warthog and Zebra on the list for sure and probably a few more antilope species, like Wildebeest and Springbuck.

That is quite the list. Waidmannsheil and don't forget to write a report. I've hunting the Omaheke region it is east and partially southeast of Windhoek. You'll love Namibia.

If any questions arise feel free to contact me.

Folks, need advice
With the current situation in Qatar, I am booked with Qatar Airlines leaving mid month in April, not sure if I should look for another airline/flight to JNB.
Looking at BA from DFW but the rifle ammo (I like to take my own guns)fees is ~$700 plus the airline ticket or fly Ethiopian, I can fly to IAD and take the connection there and still cheaper BUT looking at the post I am getting worried about Ethiopian airlines
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

$700? How are you figuring that? It’s a 125 pounds each way.

BTW, Lufthansa flies to Windhoek through Frankfurt and they arrive in the morning.

Addis stop is doable with 90-120 minute layover if you are a bit spry, are ok of hearing and can handle yourself is semi-stressful situations. The biggest delay is the Ethiopian Air people finding a ride to take you to the security check point and then finding a ride back. Once at the security check point, they may ask you for a “permit number.” They are looking for something the Brits or Europeans have. We don’t have permit numbers in the US so I gave them my Concealed Carry Permit with its number and that solved the issue. So, nothing to be afraid of if you can hustle along, have all your paperwork filled out completely and correctly with 3 paper copies and can keep calm under stress. Of note … have the US airline desk call ahead or message Addis to let them know you are coming … they will meet you at the plane door.

You do the same when you are returning except it’s in the middle of the night. Then they stop in Rome for gas … that’s a bruiser.

In regards to Ethiopian Airways, if you are going through ADD on a 1 hour layover, consider adding 1 day to your trip. I get it that not everyone has the time to do this, but just today I sent flight info to my travel agent at Gracy Travel to inquire about a flight from IAD to BUQ, that connects through ADD, for this fall, it shows a 1 1/2 hour connection going over, 2 hours coming back. If I do take this hunt and go this route, I am adding 1 extra day in case I miss my connection in ADD. I never thought I'd consider going back through ADD, but this year I am seeing more connection time, and a business class seat from Dulles to Bulawayo is 2940, kind of hard to beat, it avoids me overnighting in SA and having flights on Airlink.

Flying delta to Johannesburg from Atlanta is the easiest. I wouldn’t fly Ethiopian with rifles to Johannesburg. It’s too much added stress if airport is busy, but also if your bags are delayed and you cannot do the check in Addis, they will not forward them on to Johannesburg.

Why would you prefer adding a day in Ethiopia over overnighting in Johannesburg? I like getting the hotel in Johannesburg and the airport is so easy to get through with rifles.

To be precise it’s about $167 per gun case and $167 per ammo case that multiplied by two as I will be coming back home comes to roughly $680

I appreciate everyone’s input here, really helpful from real life experiences, love the forum with such great people, thank you!

Let me clarify, I would not add a day in Ethiopia, I would add an extra day to my trip. For example, last year when I missed my flight in ADD, I had a 5 day management elephant hunt booked, I added 3 days to spend in Vic Falls. Because I missed my flight, I still had the 5 full days for my elephant hunt, and 2 days to goof off in Vic Falls. As it turned out, the outfitter let me hunt those extra 2 days because I hadn't taken an elephant yet.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
