8x68s velocity

Agreed with this! I also run 200gr RWS Evo in mine with Norma 204 at a conservative but deadly accurate 2880 fps.

Happy hunting with your rifle, 8x68S is also my favourite allrounder and I am sure you won't be disappointed!
Yes indeed, truly the "one and only" needed for 99%, and probably 100% for the American Continent!

how many do you need?
I have 100 brass and factory loaded now so I’m good, thanks. But I am looking forward to trying the North Forks soon.

I got my BRNO set up, got the RWS 224gr shooting one inch at 100 yards. I'll be taking it out with me for spring bear, so if I come across a good bear I'll be sure to share.

8x68S is a hammer! In the room with the 8mm Rem Mag. Great cool round, downside for a reloader is simply locating brass is all.
If people can’t find factory ammo or brass, and you have access to a lathe, you can make serviceable brass from 300 win mag, turn off the belt, enlarge the extractor groove and pass through a FLS die, trim and fire form, I was doing it for brass that I didn’t care if I lost it

My husband and I have a Heym SR21 in 8x68s, a great pairing his favourite Africa rifle. He has used RWS Evo 201g and 224g Ks, though they both shoot slower in his 600mm barrel, 2810 and 2710 respectively than RWS brochure. He does also use hand loads 170g RN and SST at 2730 just to have a milder load. We do also use Peregrine 180g VLR-4 that hasn't been measured.
The 8x68s is a great cartridge on African game, the Evo has pretty well replaced the 224g ks, plus they do a 160g Barnes loading as well, can't remember if they also do Speed Tip Pro. I think they did a slightly down loaded 180 g Ks.

Tagged out on 200lb meat bear, 300 yard shot, bear dropped on the spot. Double shoulder shot and found the 224gr RWS cone point bullet on the off side. Recovered weight 134gr, so 60% weight retention. Bullet in my opinion is on the softer side, will get around this summer to load the 220gr Sierra gameking, woodleigh, or a 200gr nosler accubond.

Looking forward for some good sausage and hamburger.

I loaded a bunch of 220 grainers and even some 250 grainers last fall. Targets look good, but have not checked the velocity yet.........you will have fun with this old cartridge............FWB

I took my Mauser 66 8x68s out for spring bear on Vancouver Island a couple weeks back, but no bueno. We tried a new area and didn’t see any.
I’m going to take it with me for the fall hunt, 300 H&H for the deer and elk and 8x68s for the bear. Just cause.

I just got back from carting mine around the hills chasing sambar, saw several, but all too far away. Somehow I didn’t feel like a 1500 mtr shot with weird gully winds or a 3-4 km walk up and down steep hills to try and get in the right spot for a shot with no guarantee that they would still be there when I got to safe shooting range. Mate got one at 50 mtrs with a 300 Roy, that hits hard

Well I settled on a new load. 67.5gr of IMR 4350 @ 3.560". Nice to take advantage of the 602 magnum length mag and long throat. Average velocity is 2820 fps like the factory ammo. Good accuracy. I did work up to 2900 fps (average 2893fps) but I decided to the extra 75fps is not needed and bolt lift started to get a bit heavy.

The 220 Sierra game king has a BC of .521, so it should serve well on longer shots.

I plan on packing this rifle with me Moose hunting this year along side a 8x57.

Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I'll try it this autumn, I do have both IMR 4350 and Sierra 220. What primer do you use for this combo?

Amazing calibre - I did have a Mauser 66 in 8x68 and 9.3x64 - the 8x68 I have hunted Africa with took everything from Springbok to Giraffe - choice of bullets getting better to be honest - basically you have a 8mm rem mag without the hassle of brass !
I had the same combination in the same rifle. Hunting all around the world with it. In Alaska took brown bear, moose, caribou and dall sheep. Right about the bullets, back then I used 224 gr Cone points for the bigger game and 187 gr H - mantels for the smaller animals. Most are to soft, even the Tug.

@Odinsraven,
I only caught this now but, 8x68s is a group 3 boltface and 9.3x64 a group 2 boltface. In addition to the different barrel with attached receiver ring and bolt with different boltface, is there anything else required to switch barrels outside of boltface group?

Greetings, dear friends. 8x68 is an excellent cal. I have been using it for more than 10 years in the EU. I use different projectiles and powders. H-mantle, SST, GMX, PPU, TIG. I loaded it with R905,N550,Reload Swiss RS70. Now I plan to put Norma 204

On what game do you use it?
I'm really want one but then in the more rare rimmed version to be used in a kipplauf.

Greetings. I mostly use it for hunting wild boars and deer (cervus elaphus l). I have also hunted mouflon, fallow deer, chamois, wolves with it... Yes, the R version is interesting, but maybe you should pay attention to the recoil. The Kip Lauf is quite light for this caliber, I think. You would definitely need a silencer or some kind of compensator

Buddy of mine in Northern B.C. did well on moose with his 8x68S using the yellow tipped 196gr. Norma dual core. Seems to me he also spoke well of the 195gr Remington bullet.

Hello,

I saw your post selling left hand rifles. Do you have any additional pics of the .416 Rem mag?

Thank you.

I have a question about your scope. Is the Innomount an SR-to-Picatinny mount?
