375 H&H Ammo?

I have just acquired a 375 H&H. I appreciate the input I got from this site in the choice between H&H and Ruger in 375. Now I am trying to get ammo. Based on everything I’ve found researching this site I am gonna avoid the hornady dgx. I am down to Federal premium TBBC or Barnes Vortex safari TSX flat base. Both in 300 grain. Of those 2 options what are everybody’s thoughts/recommendations. Thanks for any input.

There's nothing wrong with the Hornady DGX Bonded. Whatever is available in a reasonable quantity, say 100 rounds to get you started, will factor into your choice. I reload and use 300 gr Swift A-Frames. If you don't reload, try a custom ammo provider like Hendershots.

Fatback, buy any ammo that can get hold of relatively cheap and use it to get use to the rifle.
Or reload and get components if this is your first bigger bore it will take some use to it.

But when you have mastered the rifle and caliber its difficult to leave it in the safe as it can do it all.
Just bear in mind when hunting the velcoties are on the high side with factory ammo so use ammo or a bullet that can handle it.

I would highly recommend the Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 300Gr factory load. Never have I found a better .375 Holland & Holland Magnum factory load that’s perfectly suitable for ALL the game of Africa (barring the elephant and perhaps the rhinoceros). I haven’t been using anything except this load on Cape buffalo, ever since 1993. And well… going by the results, I’d say I’m pretty satisfied.

I’ve hunted hippo on land with a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum and 300Gr Barnes TSX factory loads. So far, that’s the only African dangerous game which I’ve taken with Barnes TSX bullets. But based on what I’ve seen, performance left absolutely nothing to be desired. I do, however discourage their use against lions or leopards. For those thin skinned game, traditional lead cored bullets (like the Nosler Partition) are far superior. Because they can expand quickly and properly, when employed against the great cats.

If your buy any Hornady DGX bullet/factory load which was manufactured post 2018, then rest assured. You won’t be disappointed. After 2018, Hornady began to chemically bond the jackets of their DGX bullets to the lead cores.

If you're just looking for a batch of field practice ammo (on sticks & off-hand) to start with, I suggest buying the Prvi Partizan 300 grain ammo at around $3/round.
That'll give you both practice time, and time to source your hunting round.

I shot a buffalo a week ago. Put her down with one 300 gr .375 Barnes TSX. Great bullet!

A week prior to that I shot a lioness with my same .375 H&H with a softer Cutting Edge Safari Raptor 275 gr bullet.

After firing, there will be desirable Norma brass.

Federal's TBBC or Swift A-Frames. I have used both in 375H&H as well as 416 Rigby and they work great.
Only problem is finding any for sale. Hard to find right now.

For hunting, I’d recommend TBBCs. Swift A Frame is a great bullet too. I took 11 animals last year in Zimbabwe with TBBCs and they performed perfectly every time. This was two bullets removed from a kudu one 75 yards and one up close to finish. The bullet from up close impressed me the most because even at full muzzle velocity it still performed exactly as described. However, if you aren’t going Cape buffalo hunting right away, I’d buy the cheapest lead core bullets you can buy to get comfortable with rifle at range. Save the expensive ammo for final sight in and hunting.

Barnes TSX:

I have custom ammo with Barnes bullets in 235, 270 and 300 Grain. All work well on a variety of PG.

270 Grain on a recent Croc…

I’ve hand loaded 300 and 350 grain and used the 350 on one Buff.

300 Grain on a Giraffe -shot in the neck, he went straight down.

The recovered bullets looked like an advertisement for Barnes TSX.

Great recommendations from the members listed above. Can't go wrong with any of the majors - Swift, Hornaday, Barnes, etc. I hand load the 300 grain Barnes TSX with 76 grains of Winchester 760 and get MV of 2510 FPS.

Swift and Rhino are well liked in .375 and with good reason, but it handles quite the modt one can think of of components quite good also.

I am a Barnes fan so that is my pick. I load the 300 gr TSX with RL15 powder.
If you can find the Barnes Vor-tex 300 gr, pick it up.

Of 20 different African species that I’ve rifle hunted, all mine have been shot with some form of Federal factory load, and 19 with the .375 H&H. Most have been with the TBBC. I’ve also shot the Woodleigh Hydro Solids (2nd shot on a buffalo, and a Dik-Dik), and Swift A-Frames (Lion and Zebra).

I was impressed with both of their performance as well, but couldn’t find more than a box or two anywhere, which is why I didn’t shoot as many animals with them. 300gr TBBC is loaded way more frequently and on a larger quantity than the other offerings. I’ve put multiple rounds of 300gr TBBC into a buffalo and also been impressed with performance.

Should you need, I have some 300gr Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solids posted in the classifieds. A lot of people have told me they shoot very close to the same as the TBBC in the same grain weight but I personally haven’t tried them side by side.

I like Swift, Norma Onyx and Woodliegh Weld Core bullets for my .375 in hunting loads. For practice, I use Speer Grand Slam 285 grain becuse I found a bunch of them cheap.
