Hello from Bwana Moja. Africa is NOT "The Dark Continent"

The term Colonialism has a very negative connotation, obviously. Did it also bring any benefit? From my recent trip to Namibia, I would say yes. I liked the church in Windhoek, the buildings in Swakopmund and elsewhere. Even the bore-hole. Without the ability to drill a well, the Country could not exist. Their healthcare, and even their system of Government. The colonial period brought a lot to Africa, some good, some bad. I don't know what the indigenous people of Africa are most proud of.....what they have achieved or built in the post Colonial period. Especially what they have built with their own initiative and their own funds. If they have, it's not obvious to me. Right now their are HUGE moves afoot by African organizations with palms outstretched toward North America and Europe. Rookhawk said it well regarding...."the Dark Continent". The phrase had nothing to do with melanin.....FWB

Ubiquitous wokeism and the holier-than-thou smugness it comes with are far more off-putting than calling Africa "The Dark Continent." Congrats on your credentials, though.

Well, Interweb lingo has a perfect word for that. It harkens back to mythological forest-dwellers in Scandinavian folklore. It seems that this gentleman has gained some respect among some here, so the mind reels trying to figure out what his purpose was with all this. I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, so I'll just postulate that he was bored and decided to create a bit of excitement for himself. Not the way I would have gone about it myself, but hey, vive la difference.

I didn’t know who this fella was when I read his opening post. I just knew he came across as a first rate A-hole. After researching a little and watching some of his productions, I realized that this has got to be the most narcissistic, egotistical, bloviated SOB I have ever come across. Not to step on any toes, and I love to hunt Africa as much as the next guy, but it’s real easy to kill all the animals in Africa you want. Just keep paying and keep hunting. In hunting areas, there are damn animals everywhere. I’ve been there a bunch. Dude wouldn’t know what it was like to camp in public land out west and go a week unguided without seeing an elk, in elk country.

Indeed! It is like a buffalo pat and spoor early on a crisp july morning, with the combretum leaves, moist from the morning dew softening the crunch under foot, as your heart rate starts to lift and your senses highten only for you tracker to say “godala” old!
So much expectation only to be let down…. But don’t give up, keep looking for that steaming pat that may only be a few minutes old and fresh spoor - ah the expectations start again, you’ve got to love our Dark Continent…..

My life here in Colombia is often like a Colombian version of Seinfeld. This topic has given us ammunition for some hilarious discussions. One of our good friends is called "Negra". Why? Because she is dark skinned, and Colombians embrace nicknames. She introduces herself as "Negra". We were sitting at a coffee shop gossiping one day and a DHL delivery guy came up to us asking where Sra. Xxxx lived. We were all looking at each other saying "Who is this? I don't know anybody by that name. Are you sure you are in the right place?" Then the Negra walks up and asks, "Who are you looking for?" The delivery guy says the name again and she says, "That's me." We were laughing hysterically. Nobody knew her real name. She is known and loved by all as the Negra, and she is good with that.

Prof. Bruce Gilley at Portland State University caught all sorts of holy hell for an article he wrote called, "The Case for Colonialism". It was originally published in an academic journal called Third World Quarterly. The righteous progressives and radicals in academia were aghast and the article was eventually "withdrawn" from the journal for being counter the narrative. The Left wanted to run Gilley out of his job but he had tenure.

He has also just written a book called, "In Defense of German Colonialism". He contends the attacks on it empowered the Nazis as well as the Communists. The book does talk about Namibia aka German SW Africa and Tanzania.
