hi there...
I am wondering if there are any animal species that are more indigenous to the kalahari area, than the rest of SA, or animals one should try to take in the kalahari if one is hunting there already??
I would hate to miss out on an opportunity...

Yeah, gemsbok. They are usually cheaper there as they occur naturally there and the do quite well. The rest if SA doesn't usually have massive herds n prices are steeper. Also the trophy quality in the kalahari is far better on average than the rest of Africa. Those and the kalahari springbok are really larger than most of the other places in SA. When I hunted near Kimberly I held out for a 41" gemsbok bull and a springbok over 16". I got a 17" springbok and a 41" gemsbok bull within 2 days. I saw tons of both species and got to look at some truly magnificent trophies.

Definitely, gemsbok and springbok.

I would also consider a Red Hartebeest and maybe a Steenbok (if you are interested in hunting the little fellows) But for sure a Gemsbok and Springbok. You will enjoy your time on the red sand!

Back to Kalahari only - Damara Dik Dik.

Don't forget the little guys!

A Hartman's Zebra is a hard trophy, available in western Namibia. They have a pretty limited range. Whether that is in the Kalahari or not, I'm not sure. It's a tough one to hunt, but beautiful. Had a friend who did three trips to get one. It was his African luck. I managed to find one on the sixth day of hunting.

Cant believe I missed Hartmans Zebra. That one is high on my Namibia list.

is the Hartmans zebra the same thing as a mountain zebra?
I know a guy locally who has been to Namibia 21 times and he says I should not leave without one or at least trying for one.he called it a mountain zebra

Yes, they are the same. And you NEED to hunt one!!!

when I started planning this trip I wasn't even really thinking about hunting zebra but now it has gone almost to the top of my list right under kudu

I get so pumped to hunt zebra, it's unbelievable! Mtn. Zebra hunting is just awesome!

I would highly recommend the Mountain Zebra in their natural habitat also. This year it took me 5 day to connect with a leopard, but another 9 of truly hard hunting over some fairly rough terrain to get the zebra on the very last hour of hunting. The drought in Namibia has had some effect on their skittishness also.

what a way to end the hunt

zebra sounds very challenging I can hardly wait already and I still have almost 2 years to wait

They are certainly not the docile farm horse that people seem to think they are. Burchell Zebra are cunning, wary, alert and just about the toughest animal to hunt on foot but, by reputation, Hartmans Zebra are even tougher still.

SNIPER59,

For sure the Gemsbok and Kalahari Springbuck. One thing the Kalahari area has going for it is the quality of ALL animals that inhabit it. Our group had, 41-44" Gemsbok, 16" Springbuck, 57-58" Kudu and my 29 1/4" Waterbuck.

The Hartmans Mountain Zebra is a gorgeous animal, if a person only wants one, the Hartmans should be it, but SA wants a lot of money for them. Namibia they are indigenous and a lot less money. I shot 2 of them Sept. 2012, one for a rug the other a pedestal to mimic my Burchells Zebra.

Your wait will be worth it.
