Is it possible that this is just a model 76 and not the "African" model? All of the African Dakota's I've seen have a quarter rib. Do you have some paperwork from Dakota that shows it's an African model?

I dont have paperwork or know what a quarter rib is, I’m going off the description of models from Dakota arms. Going off of barrel length and ebony forend tip. Here is attached description.

I also think all the Africans had iron sights. However it is an extremely fine rifle and a true showpiece.

The way this literature reads, the African was only available in a 24" barrel. In addition to that, the African model was only available with a minimum of iron sights, and then it was called a "Safari" because it didn't have the quarter rib. A quarter rib is a piece of squared off metal from the front of the action to the rear sight (about 1/4 of the barrel length). It is said to help draw the eye to the express "V" notch rear sight for faster sight acquisition. Below is a picture of a Dakota Arms Traveler African with a quarter rib housing the rear sight.

Why is picture #5 a different rifle? All the other show a laminate stock traveller, but picture 5 is a beautiful piece of timber...different scope, different wood, no barrel band sling swivel, has iron sights, completely different model than the other rifle...so many questions.

How about a current picture of the rifle? Say...laying on top of a periodical from recent times.

That looks like another rifle he has for sale on here. Current photos with some proof are going to be a must for a 12,000 rifle.

The good thing is that they are both on the same floor!

I accidentally included a picture of a Winchester 416 I am also selling. I am trying to remove it now. Sorry about that. If you are serious and you’d like to see I picture of this with a newspaper I can do that later today.

Don't sweat it. Looks like you got off to a rough start. Still time to pull it together and sell these rifles. Do your research and post some quality pictures.

You can ask the moderators to move your posts to the "classifieds" section as well.

Looks like from this the rifle could be at lesser value. I appreciate all the info. I’ll work on getting things moved to classifieds and updated with better photos and new price.

Just some advise, on something this nice and for the cost, a post that helps confirm you are legit is probably a must. We get new members trying to screw people on here pretty often, so helping remove that concern will go a long way.

yes, it is. I’m a bit of a Dakota collector. I’ve sold a few new and unfired off as well.

Safari calibers claim a premium. Non-proprietary calibers claim a premium. Quarter ribs, iron sights, exhibition wood, 32lpi checkering, all a premium.

the 416 Rigby I sold on here was about an $11,000 MSRP rifle. It was fairly priced at around half that, approximately, new and unfired, with build sheet, all papers, etc.

what yours is would be the very, very base model Dakota. Very similar to ones blown out by Dakota to Cabelas six years ago at about 1/10th-1/8th your asking price. What makes yours unique where you can apply a premium to that is that it is a traveler take down model. It has no other upgrades that I can see on it. Proprietary Dakota cartridges are based on 404 Jefferey brass and not too big of a deal to load for, but the proper head stamped brass is essential for safari. Do not let anyone buy the brass without the gun, the brass may be worth a substantial part of the package value.

I believe your rifle is a Dakota Model 76 western model, laminate, with a traveler take down option.

Thank you for the input! I am going to reach out this coming week to auction houses and premium dealers to get a better idea on pricing. I appreciate you taking the time.

Updating the price on this rifle to $6,000.00 OBO. It seems these take downs are quite popular these days and the Dakota guns have become more collectible after they closed up shop. Feel free to make me an offer on what you think is fair. I sold the 500 Jeffery and the Winchester 416 to two guys on here. I’d be happy to link you up with them if you want to see how it was to work with me. Hope everyone had a good holiday.

Dakota model 76 Traveler with laminate stock.

Lief is a solid guy!

I sure hope everyone involved in this transaction was satisfied. Too many questions for me in which the seller obviously didn't know what he had. (What's a quarter rib)? Next time I want to sell one of my $2000 rifles, I will gladly ask for $6000.

I will gladly take ALL of the Dakota Arms Travelall TAKE DOWN rifles you can find for $2000! In fact...i dont care what caliber they are or anything else at that price, Ill just take em! o_O Not sure where you are shopping but please...clue me in. LOL! Im VERY VERY VERY satisfied with the deal Lief made me on this TWO caliber take down Dakota Arms rifle set. After he made me a solid deal on the rifle advertised here, he found all the other parts and pieces to the take down Travelall African/Classic kit and made me a GREAT deal on them! Read on to see whats what.

To answer your other question: a quarter rib is that little piece of steel "rib" that the rear leaf sights are mounted on and they are usually approx 1/4 the length of the barrel (think thats where they got the name maybe?)...or as quoted from member BEEMA above: "A quarter rib is a piece of squared off metal from the front of the action to the rear sight (about 1/4 of the barrel length). It is said to help draw the eye to the express "V" notch rear sight for faster sight acquisition."

Lief made me a great deal on the original rifle listed for sale and then made me a great deal on all the other goodies he found about 10 days later. Im in the ENTIRE two barrel/caliber set up much less then the $6K ask, especially when you add in all the ammo that wasnt included to start. Breakdown on set up is as follows: Rifle with 330 & 404 Dakota takedown barrel/front ends (330 in classic 23" barrel with no sights and the 404 Dakota barrel in the African with quarter rib and leaf sights w/hooded & banded front sight, the receiver, the Dakota Factory hard/soft travel case, Schmidt and Bender scope, Talley QD rings and base, manuals, take down tool, 4 boxes of loaded factory 330 Dakota ammo, 11 boxes of factory new 330 Dak brass, 5 boxes of 404 Dakota ammunition, 11 boxes of 404 new factory Dakota brass and think there is a set of dies in there to boot. Im VERY happy with the take down set and Lief was happy as well and i think if you look at the other rifles he sold, everybody he dealt with more then satisfied with the way the deals went down.

Thanks for your concern...all went well. Of course when someone new to a platform offers up expensive custom rifles for sale without knowing too many of the fine details it can and should make folks ask a few questions to verify things and make sure all is good to go prior to making any deals. Communication is key and generally can sort out things when someone isnt quite sure as to whats what. And again, please...let me know if you come across any Dakota Take down rifles for $2000 as ill take them in any caliber at that price even without 2nd barrels/calibers etc!

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
