@Bob Nelson 35 Whelen

I was wondering if you had any of the modern pressure loads for the 35 Whelen using H414?

H414 does extremely well in the 9.3x62, and since it does, I’m thinking it will do very well in the Whelen case.

What are is your opinion?

Anyone else use H414 using modern pressures of 60k - 64k psi?

I’m all ears to see what y’all have to post!

I don’t know about the Whelen, but 414/760 has worked very well in everything I have used it in. If I could only have one powder, it would be 760/414.
It is dirty however.

Well, it’s a good thing I’m shooting it out of a bolt action rifle. I say let it be dirty!!
That’s awesome to hear it has worked well in everything else you’ve used it in! That’s music to my ears!
I’m betting the heavier projectiles will do very well with H414.

Hi hawkeyesatx,

I think 414/760 will do very well for heavy bullets in the 35 W. It works great in my 9,3x62 with 285 gr bullets, at almost 2500 f/s.
Good luck!

CF

I believe you are right, especially when you have experience with it in the 9.3x62.
Thank you for letting me know!

Checked all my data for bullets up to 310 grains. NO DATA ON H414. If it is W760 in a different format it is to slow for anything but the 310s.
H4350 at 60 grains mildly compressed will give a bit over 2,200fps at very mild pressure.
I tried W748 in my AI and it was very squirrelly even with recommended loads.
CFE223, Re15, varget, H4895 and H8208 are the recommended for the Whelen.
H380 and H4350 are a bit better with the 310s with high load density and lower pressures.
Hope this helps.
You could try 760 but I don't think you will get enough powder in the case to give the velocities you want.
Bob

How does Varget go in the AI version?

I was looking for similar data for my .358 Win. I have a surplus of 760 but none of my books listed anything, ended up settling on H4895 for now until TAC becomes available.

@Tree-ratsniper
That is one of the best powders for the 358 win. It's a very underrated caliber.

Yes sir, the cartridge is new to me, the great state of Iowa is finally allowing bottleneck cartridges for deer season but the have to be .350 or larger. I screwed a Shaw barrel onto a Savage 16 that I've had for years. Have done lots of load testing this fall but the components shortage isn't helping. H4895 & Hornady 200 gr SPs are the combination so far.

When I loaded for a Whelen, I found 414 to be (much like my fav powder 4350) a little too slow........it works well in my 243 however...as I'm sure Bob will attest (ha)...............FWB

With the velocities you get the 225gn Sierra game king and Woodleighs would be great as well

Hi,

I said H414/W760 should do very well with HEAVY bullets in the 35 Whelen. Starting at 250 grs and, better, up. For 275 and 300 grs, not too common but available, and useful for some tasks, these powders should shine.

Good luck!

@Coldo Ferreira
414 and 760 are fare to slow for the 250s in the Whelen and are not listed in any of my data for the Whelen.
H4350 and 2209 are the slowest listed for the 310s and gives around 2250fps with a mild compressed load of 60 grains.
Forget 760 it is to slow.
Bob

414/W760 is about the same burning rate as the 4350s, but being a ball propellant it could have different results. Internal ballistics are very funny.
4350 is too slow for the 30-30, but you can find W760 load data for it.
@Wyatt Smith
Winchester 760 and 748 get a bit squirrely when you start getting near top pressure.
Are you sure it's 760 in the dirty 30. I know it loves 748.
Bob

Hello Bob,

Yes, 414/760 is in the same category as the 4350s. But being much denser and Ball type, higher charge weight can be used for a charge density of 100% with high enough pressures-velocities. No need to compress! It is what happens in the 9,3x62 with 285 gr and heavier bullets!

CF

I have found some load data for H414 ( aka W760 ):

First load, 200 gr spitzer bullet 60k psi
2nd load, 225 gr spitzer bullet 60k psi
3rd load, 250gr spitzer bullet, 60k psi
4th load, 250 gr spitzer bullet, 64k psi
5th load, 225 gr spitzer bullet, 64k psi
6th load, 200 gr spitzer bullet, 64k psi
