Best Drink You've Had on Safari?

Cold water back at the truck after spending 11 hrs on elephant tracks and getting back to the vehicle..

Couple of cold beers on the truck on the way back to camp after a long days hunting...

Brandy and coke, whiskey or G&T at sunset and around the camp fire....

Good wine with the evening meal.....

I think the most memorable drink one of my clients ever had was a Martini. When he would come in from a morning hunt he would insist on a very dry Martini in his room, he kept his special olives in this same room. The camp was awakened to the sounds of a man screaming (this particular client was a bit emotionaly challenged). It seems that a young naughty bull elephant had stuck his trunk thru the barred window reached across the sleeping client and was trying to steal olives out of his olive jar. The client was awakened to the huffing sound that was emitted from the elephants trunk.

When I went on the 21 day lion hunt in the Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe I knew I needed to take something with me. You see on most safaris I just like to drink what they have and enjoy the local beers and yes now the scotch. I always hated scotch but spending so much time in Africa you can only drink so much beer! Now I do enjoy scotch of many varieties. When traveling I just want to embrace the culture and drink “whatever pours”!

So back to Zim. I thought what would be better than a really good martini in the middle of the wildness? So I packed a small shaker and a big jar of olives and gambled on being able to get vermouth along with the vodka in the duty free in JNB. I was able to get what I needed at duty free just before jumping on the plane to Harare.
The first few nights I just drank what was in the bar but after taking my lion.....The party was on and the shaker came out of my bag, along with everything else.
What a good time we had. The PH’s, the film crew filing Trophy, and myself sipping martinis in the Omay!
What a memory.

I do love Tafel Lager in Namibia and XXXX beer in Australia. Those two are hard to beat. I know, I’ve had some experience drinking
Regards,
Philip
More about the Lion please, who cares what you drink, that's something to celebrate!
Orange Fanta is pretty delicious when it’s cold and the temp is high.
Come to Australia, Fanta is Orange. Maybe some quirky flavours can be sourced at speciality shops.
First light in the morning, quietly sitting at the fire, watching and listening to the bush wake up - strong local coffee, not too hot, no cream, no sugar, dripped or pressed.

Evening fireside, telling and listening to stories- one or two shots max single malt like Famous Grouse on the rocks.
You gotta have Coffee, the the better it is the better it is!
A whisky would be nice after dinner, a few beers first gives me appetite.
Beer shandy, Castle and 7up 50/50, in the shade in the afternoon.
Huh? Is that a thing? Where did it originate?

Ok, I had some good beers in Africa, one I did not enjoy so much.
I tried some local Brandy.
Local wines are good. I bought some SA wine in Australia and enjoyed it.
I had some Glenlivet on the flights, made the most of it.
I took a bottle of "The Great Aussie Spirit" Bundaberg Rum, I could not tempt the outfitters. I thought I was doing a good thing but they shy'd away. I'm sure Bob woulda made a pig of himself if I was shouting.
Bundy is an acquired taste but once bitten by the Bundy Bear you enjoy its unique flavour. The aged versions are a little more refined like the gentlemen here.

It is for the ladies and soft footed guys who tend to get blisyers.......
Exactly...and a hard seltzer to go with the man-bun.

Even my wife gets pissed if someone comes near her beer with anything other than a cold glass.

I posted the link in his thread. Just search my name and you will find lots.

Late 70's, stationed in Aschaffenburg it was called "cola bier"

It´s not what you drink but with who and when.

I remember talking well into the night, with two PH friends I had known for a couple of years, a very interesting conversation, fueled by a bottle of whiskey whose brand I cannot remember.

I personally can't stand the taste of wine or any spirits, so I stick with beer, and not very many per day at that. The only ones I remember having on my two trips were Tafel and Windhoek in Namibia and then Castle and Castle Lite in RSA. I liked them all fine. Everything else was water, juice or Diet Coke.
The VERY BEST drink I had over both trips was a couple of cold bottles of water at the bakkie after walking the hills for kudu. I was THIRSTY!!!

I can easily name the worst - Manica beer of Mozambique. It is vile. The best thing to say about it after a long day chasing buffalo in the swamp is that it is wet. Southern Africa has traditions about making great beer from the Germans and the Dutch. In Mozambique they emulated the Portuguese o_O:eek: They probably should have tried Port.
I guess my taste buds differ, or maybe I burned them out, lol. I had good memories of Manica 15 or so years ago. I liked it better than the alternative at the time, DosM. Regardless, the PH's and I enjoyed more than our needed share of brandy & Cokes after the major trophies were down. Delicious.

But, it was the home Wally Johnson was never allowed to return to, and that has to count for something!

But he was glad to get away from the beer.

Not to further hijack the thread, but what is the craft beer scene like in Johanseberg or Windhoek? Can you find ipas, stouts, etc at a higher end liquor store on the way out of town? I assume the beer mentioned so far is Bud/Miller/Coors type
The answer is a big yes in Johannesburg. You can get tons of craft from big to small brewers. Beers out in the sticks tend to be SA Breweries (Hansa, Castle) or Namibia Brewery (Windhoek, Tafel) but in JHB you can find a lot.
If I recall it was called Hansa , a beer I had in RSA, end of the day before heading back to camp after getting a nice mountain reedbuck and a bushbuck in the same day on a big property in the karoo. Honorable mention was the unique mixture of captain morgan and green sparletta cream soda cannot recall what the younger PH in camp called it.
When it comes to plain lagers I drink Hansa the most. Its a pilsner so a little more bitter.

I would guess thats a "John Deere" ;)
