Well I've Done It Now!!! (Joining The R8 Cult)

@CoElkHunter
Being the humble, caring and knowledgeable man I am I will give generously of my wisdom to you Wyatt and lead him on the 25 and 35 path of righteousness and steer him clear of all evil like the 243. Yes he may venture down the R8 path at some stage in his life, with my profound blessings.
He has much to learn and experience as a young grasshopper and as long as he take the path of learning, enjoyment and enlightenment he will get much pleasure from his journey. Once he has traveled the road to final enlightenment he may well then choose the R8.
Geez I'm full of shit today.
Bob
Bob,
To end your .243 pain, get some cases from your friends (I’m sure Bruce has a bunch) and neck them up to .25 with your Savage .250 or .25-06 dies (just the neck) and your nightmare might end? It may be a long painful process to acquire a barrel/action for the new to you cartridge, but until then, when you look at the .243, you’ll see a .25 calibered cartridge and your spirits will rise to the occasion.
Just my 2 centavos.

Step right up Sir Charles!!! I can have you in a nice R8 by the end of the week! Most everything I own is for sale! Hahaha!
No you sold the other one I would have purchased without even talking to me! Man I hope you keep this one for a little while.

@CoElkHunter
Now there you go trying to corrupt poor young mister Smith. He has yet to learn the joys of various calibers and rifles.
For the price of ONE R8 barrel he could get 4 or 5 reasonable 2nd hand rifles and calibers a nd have a shit load more fun on his learning journey.
He has even advanced to wildcat cartridges in the form of 25/303 (or 257 Roberts rimmed).
Now let him grow and develop.
Bob
The .416RM barrel with sights and barrel band for the wifes R8 was $1450, I'm not interested in basically any $300 rifle, definitely not to take to Africa let alone DG ;)

Which one was that???
That's the thing about you Toby458. Because you post so many nice guns for sale, many of us feel like we know you. That translate to making deals if we choose without all of the normally verifying info about the seller and the gun itself. There are just a few members on our site that I will either just send or receive a personal check and call it a deal.

Well I appreciate the confidence! I pride myself in being honest and making people a great deal. I sincerely wish people are happy with anything I sell them.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen and @CoElkHunter I already have one straight pull rifle, a K31 Swiss, that should hold me off for a while. It’s not like I could afford a Blaser without selling a lot of my other rifles, which I would rather keep.
By the time I can afford a Blaser, the R8’s might be outdated, just the R93s.

One thing I will say about this rifle is. It's the only gun that I've ever studied that I can't fully understand how it operates. It's definitely a TOTALLY different animal than a Mauser or Winchester 70! It's kind of like the Ipad of rifles. Haha!
LOL! Interesting tech analogy.

I have compared my Blaser R8 to my traditional bolt action rifles as transistors to vacuum tubes.

Enjoy your rifle!

Where did you get a 416 barrel that cheap???
+1. Maybe there's a misconception of the cost of both the R8 rifles and the extra barrels available for them? Like many here who don't own or have never seen one, I can only view the costs from the prices I see on GB, GI or other sites. Most R8s on these sites are north of 5k and the barrels are approaching 3k. I did just look on GB, where several R8 synthetic Professionals are in the $3,100-$3,300 range. Barrels in the $2,500-$2,900 range. This is what we Blaser R8 clueless, but rifle aficionados see? Maybe there are some "secret" obscure selling sites out there that I/we clueless don't know about, but for the average person looking, this is what we see? From almost every person on here, and especially from One Day's great thread on his R8 transition, I personally feel the R8 is worth every penny! I'm not in the hunt for one at this time, but some enlightenment on where one interested in an R8 might buy one at a reasonable price and barrels (w/sights) for $1,450, would be greatly appreciated?

Wyatt,
Get out of your reloading/gun building space! The new Savage pull bolt has arrived! Ha! Ha! Ha!

@CoElkHunter check with Cove Creek outfitters. They have barrels around $1080 if I recall correctly. Euro Optic also has barrels around that price. Once you buy the rifle, adding a barrel is simple. But you may need a different bolt face ($400) and new scope mount ($400) and scope ($?).
If a hunter is about to buy an R8, he is also probably a collector of a variety of rifles. I’d be curious to know how many rifles the average person has before adding an R8 to the gun cabinet?? (I’d venture at least a dozen or more.)
In my case it was more than 2 dozen before a R8 arrived.
It should be called an R25 or something like that. I’d be curious to hear other’s “R factor”. We know @TOBY458 was probably R100+.

@mikecatt13
The $300 rifles aren't meant for Africa. It's all a bit of a shit stir for a young fella. You can get A lot of rifle 2nd hand if you shop around and play w ith different calibers to broaden your horizons. I could have bought a Ruger No3 in 22 hornet for 300 bucks. Still kicking myself for not buying it. So you can get some good guns in that price.

Ha! Ha! I don't know with Toby though? He posted a list of of 214 rifles/firearms he has owned a long time ago. It may be R230 or something. Thanks for the info on Cove Creek. I'm sure when Toby see's this, Cove Creek's barrels will be on back ordered after he buys them out.

Mare why do I want to reinvent the wheel. The cartridge you speak of was called the 25 Souper and there's heaps of load data around that leave the 243 for dead. Where it should be.

@Tra3
You are close to the point!
I dont know any blaser r8 owner, that has only that rifle.
Also I cannot imagine purhcasing an R8 by novice or total begginer - this is hard to explain. But it is remote possibilty
It looks like a hunter, a rifleman, must evolve to that level of appreciation and understanding.

I have passed a milestone of "dozen", and still do not have any straight pull.
But also, what I dont have is:
Pump action, and lever action. Havent found the need for this yet. But I admit they have apeal.

In long guns I have, in variety of calibers, one or more of following:
Break action
Semi auto with rotational bolt system, gas operated
push feed
CRF sako
CRF mauser
rim fires.

If it ever happens that my country bans semi auto rifles, most probably my next choice will be straight pull, as a substitute for my semi. (Obviously it sounds as a step back from semi auto, not as evolution for further upgrade of inventory, in my reasoning, and I will have to work on this , mea culpa, mea maxima culpa)

@Tim1990
Is the 8.5x55 similar to the 338 federal balisticly
Bob

No, it’s not. The 8,5 is much stronger.
Iam using the SAX KJG (a German manufacturer). The 8,5 has 1030m/s and 4775joule, the .338 has 880m/s and 3485 joule.

It’s more likely a 8x68 for short barrels in my opinion.
I have measured 1020 m/s with a 52cm barell
