Trying to ship a double barrel to California and my local FFL here in Austin does not ship to California.

Does anyone know an FFL in the Austin or San Antonio Texas area that ships rifles to California?

might try @Mark Biggerstaff ... his shop is in El Campo... a bit further than San Antonio for you.. but he is a well known, trusted, and regarded member here that might be able to help you out..

and.. duck season is upon us.. and.. El Campo has AWESOME ducks! :)

You do not need to go through an FFL to ship to CA. Destination has to be an FFL. You can just pack it and ship it via UPS or Fedex.

Except some FFL’s will not accept shipments from a private individual, they’ll only accept them from another FFL.

It can be done, there is an extra step in California that must be done but I don’t remember what it is. I shipped a shotgun to California six or seven years ago with no fuss or muss.

Have a rifle coming to my ffl now that was shipped by private individual. Look for ffl around where it’s headed and ask their policy.

I have shipped rifles to CA before as well, directly to an FFL there.

I found this on a CA gov site:

I am not an FFL but I want to ship a firearm to a California FFL. Do I have to obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number before shipping a firearm to California?
  • No. Only shipments from Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) require a Firearms Shipment Approval number.

That's the irony of it. Dealers have to get approval, private sellers not. Go figure.

I remember the first time that I shipped a firearm to a FFL holder for some trigger work on it.

I took it into the UPS trailer and all they asked me was what it was and if it was unloaded along with how much insurance I wanted on it.

A couple of months later I had a notice that I had a package that required a signature on it. I went down to their trailer the next day and signed for my pistol and took it home.

I'm not sure if it has changed but at that time they could ship a firearm back to a non FFL person as long as that person was the owner of the firearm.

That has not changed. If you own it and ship it to a dealer or repair facility, it is returned to you. No need to go thru a dealer, its already yours.
