I just happened to look at hunting license sales in Vermont...2004 vs 2018.

Total sales were down about 25%!!!!

I also saw that a non-resident license (that I believe allows for deer hunting) is only $100.

What is going on in Vermont? Horrible trend...

I might have to buy a license next year and take my M99 for a walk up there!

Hunting sales went down but gaming sales went up...thats what happened. The outdoors is a dieing past time, unfortunately!

I’m in, need to get that 358 win model 99 now!

From the little bit I know, or think I know, I believe the quality of game/hunting is also down significantly. Probably more than 25% :(

Vermont here I come!
It is sad that people today, especially youth, don’t have much interest in outdoor activities. Once video games and cell phones became mainstream, hunting and fishing went by the wayside.
There’s no guarantee of “instant gratification “ when one hunts, fishes, etc. It can be difficult, monotonous, miserable and time consuming (kinda like being here on AH? Ha! Ha!) and many of today’s youth can’t handle it? They want gratification immediately, so they are on their phones, video games, etc.

Land available to the public to hunt on? I quit going to Kansas pheasant hunting for this very reason a number of years ago. I now go to Nebraska. And, the license fees keep going up?

All of those miseries that you mention CEH are the main reasons I hunt! After getting divorced I needed something to fill that hole that my wife left and I just couldn’t find anyone to kick me in the nuts repeatedly!

Not the same circumstance for me, but similar. I hunt because I enjoy being in the outdoors and pursuing something that’s much better adapted to the outdoors than me. For me , it’s not about the kill as much as it is the pursuit. I once had five legal bull elk (a decent six point included) walk towards me within fifteen yards and I stood there with my rifle and a cow elk tag in my pocket. I moved slightly so they wouldn’t walk over me and they walked into the forest. After that, I didn’t care if I shot an elk on that trip. I did though shoot a cow a few hours later. But for me it’s the experience/adventure of the hunt and not necessarily always harvesting an animal.

I was just kidding buddy! I hunt for the experience also, and I look cool in camo!

That is the essence of a real hunt!

BTW, would you know about the .358 STA? Just curious about that cartridge? Thanks!
I’ve never played with it but it looks good, form from 8 mag brass like most of the shooting times line. Pushes a 225 over 3000 and a 250 at 2900. Definitely should be bad ass with an accubond or an A-frame!
Now you got me thinking!

Very little open land and lots of antis and gaining traction against hunters everyday. Doe/buck ratio needs work. quality of bucks is getting better with the antler restriction imposed 4-5 years ago but very tough hunting compared to most other states. If you want to test yourself On whitetails come to Vermont
I’ve hunted Vt for 25 years and get a buck at least every year. Not typical for most... That said I still need to travel to OH,KY,NY each year to get my whitetail fix!!!
Come to Vermont. Good luck! happy hunting!

What is the Moose hunting like? I’m sure it is a difficult draw but if drawn is success rate any good?

I was fortunate enough to draw one a while back 12-15 years ago ended up settling on a 700lbs cow. We had a really bad kill off of our moose population from ticks. State is working on it but population is not good at all. Tags are just about impossible to draw at this point. They can come up with a solution soon!

Actually, in a lot of areas there are many deer. I see 1 to 6 deer a day so far.
That is really good to hear. I hope things are on the upswing and hunting continues to improve. Is access to huntable land difficult?

Glad to hear quality is getting better. It sounds antler point restriction is letting baby bucks grow up?
