Hello All -

Question: Can you please tell me about the trophy quality / terrain of hunting Cape Buffalo in Mozambique. Also, what other species are unique to this country or animals I should conisder putting on my wish list for 2013?

First of all what area are we talking about Mozambique is a big country and what outfitter are you planing on hunting with I will be there in 2013 as well I have on my list buffalo suni grysbuck and kudu I will be just west of zims gonaezhou park

First of all what area are we talking about Mozambique is a big country ....

Lot of different hunting terrain available in 2000km.
From grass and palm savannahs to forests and swamps (Delta)

Add Sable to your list.

Mozambique has excellent Buff, monster crocs, great Chobe Bushbuck and there are good Sable in numerous areas . It also has some hard to get species like Red Duiker, Sharpe's Grysbok and Suni.
I'm heading up for a month on the 8th of August and will post a full report with pics when I am back. The concession we are in borders the Zambezi (in the North).
I believe the Coutadas in the North, bordering Tanzania have good leopard too.

Mozambique is 1200 mile long, North to South so the terrain varies greatly. Depends on the area you are hunting. As others are suggesting: Croc - Zambeize and Lake Cahorra Bassa, Red Duiker, Suni, Orbi, Nyala, Litchstein Hartebeeste, Sable, Bushpig. I'll be there the end of Aug.

It's 2000 Km not 1200 Miles. :)

Depending where you are at, Mozambique has large numbers of Sable in places, Suni, Nyala, Red duiker. I would ask your outfitter what animals are present in the hunting area and which ones you are likely to encounter, research each and seriously consider taking those that are not found in many other places and those that are either easier, larger or cheaper than other areas.

I operate a big concession in the Niassa province but as mentioned else where in this discussion Moz is a massive country and varies hugely in species and terrain from North to South.

In the north we have the following: Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, Leopard, Rooseveldt Sable, Livingstons Eland, Greater Kudu, Common Waterbuck, Lichtensteins Hartebeest, Bohem's Zebra, Common Reedbuck, Chobe Bushbuck, Warthog, Bushpig, Grey Duiker.

Our speciality species are Sable, Leopard, Lion, Buffalo and monster Livingstones eland. We operate off small quotas on purpose to maintain our trophy quality and we are one of the few Moz operators in Niassa who run a 365day/year proper management plan with serious anti-poaching at the forefront. We are a CBNRM (Community Based Natural Resource Management program where the area belongs to the local communities and we run the safari operation and all concession management.

I will be happy to send you more info via email on our area or recommend another area according to your needs.

I would add the Lichtensteins Hartebeest if you have any in the area that your planning to hunt.

In the north east (east Niassa Reserve areas and on to the coast) it is hot dry Miombo woodland with sand rivers and Jesse bush adjacent. No swamps. These areas can have (depending on Block) good numbers of game such as Leopard, buffalo, Eland, Bush pig, Bush Buck, Sable, Zebra, Kudu, Water Buck and others.. Niassa Reserve Hunting Blocks have the best game numbers and less poaching due to less Human presence. A good example of what this area is like click on the attachment;

Further west near Lichinga are at a higher altitude which makes it cooler but also more wet, thus longer grass meaning hunting is best left till at least September.

Hunting areas around Lake Cabora Basser have good numbers of Crock, Hippo with some blocks holding numbers of Elephant, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard. A hot area.

To the east of the lake where the Zambezi river enters the ocean is swampy flat land with good numbers of Buffalo, Crocs, PG and Mosquito.
These areas are the main areas for BG safaris in Moz.

Zambezi Delta area;

Classic Niassa Reserve;

That about says what you need to know.
Thanks for the run down.

That Delta picture of those Buffalo is incredible.
So flat, but so far away.
