WORST hunting experience ever?

There was the time, when I took off my boots to stalk a Mulie buck, and stepped on one of these....
I won't ever do that again.

Hunting buffalo at Sengwe 1, Zimbabwe. What a crap right from the start. There were a just a handful wild animals, didn’t see a single buffalo. However lots of cattle, goats, donkeys and people.

Jumping cholla..... ouch..... hour many hours to pull all the barbed spines out?
It ended my hunt for the day, and I was limping for a few days. I wedged my hunting knife blade between my foot and the pod, and gave a big yank. A whole new dimension in pain.

I just read that they were actually getting to a peace accord with a majority of the "parties", "combatants".
Unfortunately, that does not solve the problems created by the bloody war. That is going to take time.

@BRICKBURN can probably find the link to post about my worst hunt? I think I win but I would have rather not.

Found it.

I was in the midst of planning a stroll in the jungle and your hunt report was certainly in the front of my mind. I asked some experienced folks and they suggested, rather strongly, that I should not participate. The area was being squeezed on both sides from two different groups.
No desire to dodge miscreants while hunting.

When I was living in AZ, that was my my grandmothers job. I will yank nails out that have gone completely through my foot, or sew a cut closed, by getting nailed by jumping cholla was a trip to grandmas no matter how old I got.
Sadly, she has passed away.

The first year I headed to Arizona to hunt javelina with a couple of friends one of them managed to get a cholla on his back. We got it out and it wasn't 5 minutes later and he had another one. The funny thing was that this was in another friends back yard.

To this day 25 years later that one person will go a mile out of his way to avoid a area that has those cholla's in it. Just this last year he was on a ridge and I headed through a garden of about 2 acres of them to get to him. It amazed him that I didn't get a single one into me, he still won't go near them.

While Quail hunting in the desert, I have seen cattle encased in so many Cholla pods, they looked like a giant Porcupine. I felt much pity for those Cows. They had to be absolutely miserable.

Cows don’t mind it that much. I used to have a cow that would use barbed wire to scratch herself. When the prickly pear fruits start getting ripe, al the cattle in the area with have a face full of spines from eating them.

Growing up in Tucson I always tried to carry a heavy comb for pulling that stuff off. My step-brother got a hand covered with it once. That was awful.

Been there done that. Worst screwing by Booking agent and Outfitter.

This happened just north of Tucson, in unit 37b. I was chasing the biggest desert muley I have ever seen. Taking boots off in the desert is never a good idea, but it was dry, and this buck was with about a dozen does, and almost impossible to get close to him without getting busted. I decided to try anyway, and took off my boots for a stealth stalk....it didnt end well for me.

Simple: Having paid $2000 for a deposit on a Trophy Axis Buck Hunt in Texas. Getting the run around from the PH for two years filled with excuses and then having to take him to court in Kerrville, Texas to win a judgement. Put a bad taste in my mouth and now I hunt with outfitters based on their references and word of mouth. I will never hunt with an outfitter without doing my due diligence and homework - another reason why I love this forum. Lost a lot of respect for this person - I was brought up that you are only as good as your word and a handshake sealed a deal. I will continue to hold myself accountable to that standard.

I’m a native TEXAN and hate to hear these stories but unfortunately they are common. I dont guide hunts for a living anymore but will take you on an Axis hunt anytime you want to come. No deposit, just come and hunt - when you shoot your buck, just pay the ranch and be satisfied. Check out the SCI Record Book under JES Adventures, that is my bona fides. PM me when you are ready.

I cant say I’ve ever really had a bad hunt but certanly some that were less than expected - thats hunting.

That being said, 100+ miles on a horse in the Yukon in ‘08 searching for Stone Sheep and finally seeing a ewe in a rain storm on the last day. Well that is my current memory of disappointing.

The best was taking my Stone Sheep a 1/4 mile from my horse on the 2nd day of my hunt in ‘12.

Things happen for a reason and I respect every trophy I have collected but that Stone hold a special place with me.

My worst hunting related experience was when I had to defer my DG hunt - due to incapacitating injuries at work caused from saving my colleague's life. My SA PH agreed, but less than 6mths later, he disappeared with my US$13.5K. My 13yo son was also to accompany me on this, his first, overseas hunt. So, after recovering, and a few years later of patient research and lobbying the SA government - including the Office of the President of South Africa - I finally got the bastard convicted in a SA Court.

I never got the money back - despite his guilt - and last I heard, he's now appealing the ruling.

Read my article about it, here on AH.

Bastard.

You boys have truly had some bad luck. Nothing like mine, however. I hunted in Spain in 2006 and the white wines were not properly chilled. They once served a Pinot Grigio with red meat!! Go figure. And to make it even worse..............some of the massage girls required extra training..........no limit to the number of things that can go wrong on a hunt.....no sir..............FWB
