Introduction, from the UK

Welcome to AH sir! Ask lots of questions.

Thanks for your kind words fellas.
We are confirming our booking this weekend. We will (hopefully) be going with Settlers Safari.
There will be three of us travelling, two from the UK and one from over in the US.
I am sure we will have lots of questions !!
Hi Russ, I don't want to offend you but you should be asking lots of questions before you book.
Don't forget there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Welcome aboard Russ. What are you guys planning to hunt? What country will you be hunting in? Will you be using your own or Outfitter's rifles? AH is a website where you can get answers to any and all of your questions. Look around the site for a while and I'll bet you'll find a number of posts (topics) dealing with areas of interest to you. We all have our favorite "toys" and different experiences that taint our objectivity and that sometimes leads to lively discussions. Always remember that the one thing you will never get from this site is bad advice. Enjoy, and happy hunting.

Hi Markcz
The first thing you will learn about me, is that it is impossible to offend me. ;)
We asked lots of questions of the outfitter before we booked. We also searched online for reviews of them, and spoke to some people who had used them in the past.
But I will have a lot of questions to ask before we go, mainly about bullet choice (using a 7mmRM), suitable clothing, extra equipment to take, places to visit after the hunting etc

Hi Shootist43
We are shooting plains game, but not trophy standard, just representative. We are heading to South Africa, Eastern Cape. We will be taking our own rifles , though we have to research the import/export of firearms from USA side of things (we have the UK side sorted).
I have read quite a lot of threads so far. Some have caused more confusion than I started with (tipping!) and some settled my mind a bit (using a 7mmRM). I have really enjoyed the hunting reports, and am making my way through them slowly.
I suspect I am about to do something that will change from a "once in a lifetime" vacation, to an annual trip!

Well done Russ you are obviously on it. You would be surprised the amount of people who spend thousands and don't ask all the questions, you usually meet them at the airport on your return journey with glum faces.
You will have a great time. Markcz

Russ there is an AH Sponsor called Rifle Permits in South Africa. If you use their services they will get your firearms through SAPS in very short order. Lots of AH members use them. They also offer a VIP service that shortens your wait going through Customs. I wouldn't think of going to South Africa without their help. Here is the link http://www.riflepermits.com/ Henry is a Lawyer and knows the law. The "cops" don't fool with his clients.

Ah, yes, I know the area a little. My friend has had ground near Southerness for over 20 years and I go up a couple of times a year. I also know someone who had a deer park at Castle Douglas.
Lovely area of the world Ian

I will be there in Nov.
Maybe we all could get together for a pint or two.

Could be a good idea, you may be tired of dragging all my hinds to the larder and need a break. ;)

You going to learn to shoot by then?
May be an idea to bring a rifle this time? Though there will still be a choice of rifles for you to use if you don't fancy the hassle

Hi
I have been a deer stalker in the UK for more years than I care to remember,
A good friend of mine has hunted in Africa several times and has told me many stories.
On a recent stalking trip, after an evening of story swapping, we decided to start planning my first ever trip to South Africa!
I am really looking forward to being part of the forum and learning from you guys before our trip (May 2020).
Please excuse any rookie questions I may have and, be gentle with me :)
Welcome Russ! Have you considered Namibia for your first African experience? Currently it is politically and economically the most stable country in Africa. The finest in FREE RANGE plains game hunting

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
