What do I use to thwart Tsetse flies?

I'd heard rumors that Avon "Skin so soft" or some such product was the only thing to use on Tsetse flies that worked. Is that true?

Is it also true permethrin and the other mosquito/tick sprays and clothing washes have no effect on tsetse flies?

What part of the Eastern Cape? I believe that most of the Eastern Cape doesn't have them.

Went camping a long time ago in Canada and my friend used skin so soft... It seemed to make a great marinade and the bugs enjoyed the flavour it provided

Maybe bugs in Africa have a more discerning pallett

I've read, not used that the Skin So Soft with Picardin helps. And sunscreen with Bug Guard.

basically whatever you put on you will get stabbed by them , so just something you have to put up with if you want to hunt these places which are usually the best big game areas .........and remember if you catch one to kill it you have to roll it between your fingers hard till you feel it crush, as they are very tough insects

Will they burn? Thinking a lighter and aerosol can could be a small measure of revenge.

yup they burn....but so would everybody around you as you tried to fry one with your flame thrower they also tend to arrive with a lot of friends so i would love to see you jumping around trying to get one with your can , and as the time you tend to notice them is just when they have stuck you which can make you jump a lot your probably also going to fry yourself!!

I don't know how they compare to tsete flies, but the dang deer flies of the north country are vicious little bloodsuckers. I forgot to spray myself one day flyfishing, and they attacked my hands and head, to where they actually chased me off the river. My hands swelled up like balloons from all the bites. I use deep woods off, with a high concentrate of deet.

Those deer flies in the upper stretches of Slough Creek in Yellowstone Park I'm certain are attracted to Deep Woods Off. Only 100% Deet repelled them and that was only for a short period between reapplying.
