Would you rate a 9.3 x 62 as a classic?
That is the first question, if the answer is yes then what would your matching 2 calibers be - one smaller light rifle and one larger in the .40 caliber.

I suppose we could go a bit further and ask what would your plus one heavier choice be in 0.500 caliber to match?

Sure I will search and scroll through previous threads, I am sure there exists a 'what would your 3 rifle battery be'.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Yes, of course, a classic. Been around a loooong time. Ahead of that would be the 7x57 for the light game up to kudu size, and after the .404 Jeffery which can handle the big five as well as anything. Never had a .50 cal rifle other than black powder, but if I did it would probably be a .505 Gibbs, also a classic. But there really is no real reason to have one as the big 40's and 45's will handle anything on the planet.

Good post. It's always fun to debate these things. My thoughts(academically): 6.5x55 and 416 Rigby. The 416 Rigby gives more reach I think and more thump. The 6.5 is a great round for the smaller stuff.

Sestoppelman - those were my thoughts exactly. Concern was 7 x 57 was more military than classic? Like .303 or 30-06......
Pheroze - those two crossed my mind too but sometimes it seems everyone has a .416 Rigby
What about 7 x 64? Not a classic maybe, I had never heard of it till recently.

For more of the unusual perhaps the 275 H&H and the 450/400?

308, 300 Win Mag, 416 Ruger, 458 Lott
But I could do most all the hunting I want to do with the 300 Win Mag

6mm or 6.5 up to 308 cal on low side. Upper side 400 Whelen and up.

.

The 7x57 has been a classic African cartridge since the English custom rifle trade introduced it as the 275 and it has taken an enormous ammount of game. Just because there were a few countries that used it in a military configuration takes nothing away from this grand old cartridge as a classic hunting cartridge.
Be that as it may , a 6.5 or 7mm on the medium sixed case makes for a superb classic hunting cartridge as a counterpoint to the 9.3 which is very handily bracketed by the 404 Jeffery.
Any 3 cartridges in a similar capacity would make for a "perfectly usable" 3 gun battery. In reality the 9.3 could do most of it itself if suitable ammo was used.

o_O of course its a classic ;) as a few here have said the .275(7x57) would be perfect for your smaller cal, and the .404 or .416 RIGBY !! as your bigger one. above that the .500 jeff or .505 gibbs if you can handle them and are looking at bolt action. but with the 275, 9.3x62 and 404 or 416 you would have no reason to buy anything else.......... so is that good or bad.......?

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
