Are you going to lap your rings? What type of ring base setup did you select? That's a fine looking Kimber.

Vance,

I don't have any rings or bases or anything yet. Actually, I would love some advice from anyone here regarding larger caliber rifles as this is my first.

If you are planning on mounting multiple scopes on different rifles then you need to get set up correctly to do it.

If you only plan on mounting this scope or a couple of others then I would actually suggest that you take it to a shop and have them do it and bore sight it for you.

Rings and bases are a matter of personal preference. I prefer Leupold for both, just don't go cheap on them.

I like any quick release (claw mounts rule :D). I use Warne or Leupold QRW rings and 2-piece bases. Not sure if they make them for Kimber. But I think Talley does.

Wood and blued steel say beautiful to me, not Kevlar and SS. Having said that, it is a fine looking and practical outfit. One thing to watch for though is that plastic stocks of any kind make more noise in the bush than wood does. You can drag branches and twigs over wood and its very quiet, with any plastic, not so much. It wont matter most of the time, but the critters hear about a 100 times better than we do and it could spoil a stalk. Good luck on the hunt.

For strength you can't beat a picatinny rail style mounting system. The Military uses them for a reason. I'm using a 2-piece picatinny rail with Buckeye Stainless rings. The Leupold QRW mounts are also very solid. There are lots of great ring and base manufactures out there. Here are a few sites to look at just to get an idea on prices. I think most 2-piece base sets for the long Winchester M70 will fit that Kimber. For a 1-piece base you have to get one made for a Kimber because of the front to back hole spacing. I have been using Seekins rings on a 300 WSM for several years with great luck. One of the things I like about the Buckeye rings, and this may be available on others, if the base locks on with a single cross bolt. So if I need to remove the scope in the field a simple small crescent wrench will easily do the job. There are quick release rings that are likely great, Talley comes to mind. But Talleys use a custom base setup that I don't feel is as strong as the Picatinny setup.

On 1-piece bases you should consider bedding the rear portion of the base. Its really easy, I did one for my 375 Ruger which I purchased from Ken Farrell. Since I have a Montana Rifle 1999 Action I was limited on 1-piece base choices.

If you use a 1-piece base you can easily check it for the need for bedding. Simply attach it to the gun using the front screws only. If there is a gap in between the action and the rear part of the base where it will touch when the rear screws are in it needs to be bedded. If you don't you will put unwanted torque on your scope. This is the video I used to do mine. The only thing I did different was I dry mounted the base and then taped off the area using painter's tape to minimize cleanup of the epoxy. I didn't want any of that epoxy in my action. It made the cleanup a snap.

Thanks for all the advice!!
