Big Bore Addiction Group

I'm thinking the Smith has more experience in barrel length in these calibers than I do, but if given the option I'll go with a 24"
We settled on a 24" barrel altho the smith said he's also done some in 22" anyway 24" works for me,now twist rates are the next question, he suggests 1-10 with a 24" barrel,my research turns up barrels that are much slower, 1-12 1-14 even 1-16 I'm going to use 400 plus Grs and don't plan on shooting much over 100yds but I want killer accuracy at that range. what do you guys think

Why not the 585 nyati Matt?

because Mr. Hubel made this rifle and i dont think he would chamber it in someone elses cartridge. ;)

Hello,
I am also addicted to heavy recoil and loud noises this started with a colt peacemaker revolver in 45-70 govt and evolved into a 2.5 ft long 3 1/2 inch 10 ga for turkey. This problem is growing worse and more expensive. Recently i have had an idea that i cant seem to satisfy and you seem like the correct people to enable me on this quest. I want a new big bore rifle, however i have become intrigued with the idea of a big bore pump action rifle does this exist?

ive never seen a pump action large bore gun but im guessing it would probably work. many big bore cartridges have less pressure then the 30-06 and ive seen a pump 30-06. the problem would be the cartridge length.

i shoot a super nova with 3 1/2 inch shells so I dont see how it couldn't be done. I wonder if someone could make it for me.

good point, i imagine it could be done by a skilled gunsmith. but sadly i dont know any one who would do it.

Here is the Rigby I recently bought from AZDave.

It now wears a Limbsaver and a NEGC peep. I swapped out the lead shot for a 14oz mercury tube.

Had hoped to sneak out of work early today to get to the range...but didn't happen. Maybe over the weekend.

sounds like a decent start, come visit me in in WA, USA and ill put some rifles in your hands that will rattle your brains like youve never felt before! :D

the 500 Jeffery, 505 Gibbs, and 500 NE are excellent cartridges! im very fond of 50 caliber hunting cartridges and would strongly recommend them.

so I made it to the range to play with the 585 HE earlier today. since I don't have any load data to go off of I had to guess based on the 577 NE load data ive got. my load for today was 140gr of IMR 4350 under a 750gr Barnes TSX. accuracy wasn't good but it gave me a chance to send a few over the chronograph to get a starting point for load development. the measured velocity was 1950-1990fps which means a little more powder is needed to get my desired velocity of 2100fps.

from an 11 pounds 14 ounce gun the recoil was stout but easy to deal with. I imagine the load at 2100fps will be a bit more of a handful but I also intend to add another 8 ounces to the gun for better balance any way.

I have one just like it except mine is factory. It is fun to shoot, but has a lot of muzzle rise. Dead on at 50 yards, but have never shot it any further than 50.

Yeah, I figure most anything I'd be shooting at with this rifle is going to be fairly close, so 50 yards is going to be the range at which I do all my early shooting with this beast.

Not even going to scope it for now. The peep will do me fine.

I calculate the recoil impulse from a 140gr powder charge under a 750gr bullet from an 11 lb 14 oz gun at............109 ft lbs!

Ugh. Not sure I could ever say that is "easy to deal with"! :A Surrender:

I hereby invoke the concussion protocol!

i promise if you gave it a try you would realize its not so bad. people said the same thing about my 11 pound 4 ounce 505 Gibbs firing a 570gr bullet at 2300fps, until they tried it and realized it was easy to shoot. now i shoot a 600gr bullet at 2250fps and its very comfortable from the 505 Gibbs.

i just tried the first 5 recoil calculators they came up on google and the recoil energy varied from 95 to 127 ft/lb. most of those numbers seem high but im discovering im a terrible judge of recoil. when i first tried a load firing 600gr at 2250fps from my gibbs i guessed the velocity was under 2100fps :A Bonk:.

i think recoil numbers dont really matter, ive shot plenty of big guns that were much more comfortable then some small bore guns ive shot.

Safari & Outdoor DGS shoot with my Verney Carron 500NE, 4 out of 4 in 18 seconds on the Lion. 25m, 20m, 15m, 10m – Great day out :)

wish we had fun things like that to do with large bores here! most ranges here wont even let me shoot my Gibbs for fear that ill damage their backstop or that i wont be able to control the rifle.

I'd like to see the same excerise with a large Caliber Bolt Gun

I'm in the process of organising a fun shoot for big bores down here in NZ. My thoughts on it so far are

1. 3x shots at 50yds using shooting sticks, shooting at a scored target ie 10 ring, 9 ring etc (no time limit)

2. 3x shots at 50yds freehand, shooting at a scored target (no time limit)

3. 3x shots, timed. After first shot timer starts next two to be fired in 3-4 seconds 1 at 50yds off sticks, one freehand at 40yds, one freehand at 25yds, reactive type target (balloons, pieces of wood etc)

4. 4x shots timed, shoot 2 shots at reactive target at 50yds, reload and shoot 2 more reactive targets at 50yds. Each miss is 5 seconds added to time.

Should be a bit of fun.

I ran several calculators using the 450gr Woodleigh (1.41 inches long) at 2,250...figuring if your twist will stabilize that bullet at that speed, you should be good to go.

Came up with 1 turn in 18 inches as optimum.

I think 1 in 16 was the old standard...on the fast side according to the calculators.

Personally, I'd alway err on the fast side vs the slow side.

I have heard of guys using 1 in 10...but I wonder if they have dreams of using the long Berger match bullets, ala 416 Barrett?

I don't see how you could go wrong with 14 or 16. Slower twists will be less stressful to cast bullets, if you think you'll ever want to go in that direction, too.

I question the fast twist since all the Info Iv'e read points to a slow twist, but looking at CZ website it shows a factory twist at 1-10, I plan on staying with copper jacketed hunting bullets in the 400-450Gr range. Also this smith has done all the Custom shop work since 2004 using Mcgowan Barrels and has been in business for 20+ years.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
