Hunting reports
Africa

I am planning my first hunt in Africa. We are trying to get it done by next summer 2016. My friend will be joining me and possibly, our wives. This will be our first hunt in Africa although we are both experienced hunters. We have extensively looked at South Africa (fences) and Namibia (little DG) as well as Tanzania-(too expensive). We are not interested in Zimbabwe.

We are looking for a 10-14 day reasonably priced hunt that will include plentiful game sightings, beautiful scenery, and quality free range opportunities on good buffalo (both) friend, wants a croc if possible, and some of the classic plains game.

Is Mozambique a good option? What areas? Outfitters? Travel? Safety?

Thanks for any help.

Possibly Zambia!!!???

From what you have just detailed of your dislikes it looks like your only options.

Reasonably priced??? Never sure what that means.

Wild areas do not have "plenty of game" sightings. Not photo safari areas with tame critters.
They are remote and if your brides are adventurous, sure.

There are several outfitters right here on AH that operate on Moz. and can provide info to you.
Jaco, Simon, etc.
Anyone along big water will be able to have a croc hunt.

Buffalo, there are a few great reports on here about Buffalo hunting in Moz. Not for the faint of heart and sure as hell not touristy.

Some areas are much safer than others.

Brickburn has just returned from Moz. Look at his report. Like he said your 2 choices are Moz and Zambia. Just for arguments sake, why not Zimbabwe? I hate the politics in Zim, but there is some good game hunting areas that are well established. Some great operators in all 3 country's. I'm sure others will chime in with some suggestions. Besides a croc, what are your priority animals? That will help determine where you really want to go. Take a bit of time and read some hunt reports. That can tell you a lot. good luck. Bruce

Brickburn's answer is great.

So much is "it depends." What I've personally experienced is that great hunting areas and great photo areas a are not one and the same. So.... Depends on what the non-hunters are willing to put up with.... My wife loved SA when we went, especially the game parks with animals in front of every bush at close range and not afraid of us at all. If I'd taken her to Zim the year before she would have hated it for "no animals and nothing to do." As a hunter I'd go back to the Zambezi Valley every day of the week and twice on Sundays!!!

My goals for the two hunts were very different. If I were you, I'd ask myself (and your friend) what are the true goals for this trip?

Just my two cents.

as brickburn said zambia is another country to think about. with 14 days you could do a 10 day hunt in a luangwa gma, and maybe stay at a lodge near mfuwe ,and visit the south luangwa nat park for couple of days first to get over your jet lag, and give your wives a transition period to get used to being out of the usa into africa, but at a lodge ,then to a hunting camp. or you could take them to livingstone after the hunt for a couple of days and stay in one of the luxury lodges near vic falls . plenty options. zambia is a pretty safe country as well. just depends on what your notion of reasonably priced is?............

here is a link to some photos of zambia

Good luck no matter where you choose. I would imagine either one will be outstanding. I understand your concern for the women. I ll be hopefully taking my wife in 2017 to SA and I want everything really nice for her as she's not the "outdoor type".

Thank you for the feedback. I have been trying to read the reports but the process has been really overwhelming. This is a first African hunt for all of us and I am the only one doing the research. We have been focusing on SA and Namibia thus far, but I am not sure that it will be the experience I am looking for in either place. I think I need to talk to someone with a lot of experience in all of these areas, and who isn't trying to sell me one place or another. I just don't know how to find that person!

Good. If you are overwhelmed you are actually paying attention.

I'm right here! (as are many others)
Been there, done that.
Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique....
Plains game and Dangerous game.

PM me.

I would listen to what brick has to say.

Michael,

You are getting a lot of good information.

Read hunting reports on the countries you are interested in.

Most members will be happy to communicate with you if you pm them.

Enjoy the decision making process. It is part of the journey.(y)

The wives thing is a big deal. Moz is near the equator. If in the Zambezi Delta it will be hot and humid with plenty of biting things. If inland it will be hot with plenty of biting things. By wilderness hunting standards, the accommodations will be comfortable but there won't be a bathtub within several hours. It is the Third World with a capital "T". I love it but it would take a special non-hunting spouse to appreciate the experience - and I would think long and hard about making any assumptions for them.

If it were me, I would strongly suggest a PG hunt in Namibia. Etosha is an easy and spectacular side trip. Accommodations will be very comfortable and your spouses will have plenty to keep them occupied. Secondly, get in touch with a reputable consultant. Anyone can create a fabulous web site. I use Jack Atchesson Jr - there are others. His livelihood and reputation are built upon giving you the experience you desire within your budget. I promise you, you will not regret the phone call.

Michael,

Wives (non-hunting variety) might get bored after 1-2 days, so be careful with that issue. You scratched Namibia because "little DG". The DG I've seen there seems to be about the same size as DG elsewhere. :). Given the recent issue in Zim, can understand your comment there, but having hunted there recently myself, I still give it two thumbs up and plan to go back. For a first time African hunt, I think the suggestion to do a PG hunt is a good one. You'll get hooked and be back again. If you want to do a DG & PG, Red Leg's suggestion for a Namibia hunt in the Etosha Park area is a good one. Trohpy fees on Oryx and Red Hartebeest are a bargain. You can see the Big 5 at Etosha, including black and white rhino. Plenty of DG in the Caprivi Strip too. Easy flights from the US to Frankfurt, then direct to Windhoek.

New poster, long time lurker here. I just got back from Mozambique on a 10 day trip (Aug 12-25th) for plainsgame with Mokore Safaris. I highly recommend moz if you want real african hunting. I have been to SA albeit only on a photo safari but I felt that Moz was truly wild hunting. That being said, alot of the game in Moz was devastated in the civil war that only ended a short time ago. We hunted in Coutada 9 and over our 10 day safari I had an opportunity (actually saw and had an opportunity to shoot) to take the following plainsgame: Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Duiker, Oribi, Suni, Sable, Eland, Nyala, and had the opportunity to hunt (was there on PG only) the following DG: Elephant, and lion. The trip was an absolute blast, I took my girlfriend and mother as a family vacation and both had a wonderful time with the hosts in camp and came hunting on a few of the afternoons when we hunted from the jeep. Very very few mosquitoes and no seeums, running water, excellent meals. I highly recommend the Duckworths for their operation in Coutada 9. They can also cater a trip to your needs as I am planning on a Buffalo/Duiker hunt since the duiker was highly elusive on my past trip! Feel free to email or pm me any questions you may have.
