So, it's always been my dream to own a double rifle.......hunt with it.....and pass it along to my son. I am looking for some direction as to what make I should consider. Though I am open as to caliber my initial thoughts are .470 or .500. I've offered elsewhere here on this site to trade an Alaskan Brown Bear/ Moose hunt for a double, but want to be realistic as far as a fair exchange is concerned. For that reason let's set the parameters for the gun that I seek at $20,000 or less. My initial thoughts were Krieghoff or Heym...........but that's coming from having zero knowledge on the subject. Oh, and I really don't care about the recoil in making my decision. Thanks in advance for any input !
Derek

Hi Derek I'm not too sure how it will work shipping from the UK to the US (I guess thats you location) but keep an eye on these guys http://www.holtsauctioneers.com/ If you need me to have a look at any of the lots for you just let me know as the place is not that far from me and I'm known to them. A Krieghoff in .470NE just sold in the main sale for £3500 with an airline approved case

Can't go wrong with either the Krieghoff or the Heym. Krieghoff does have a unusual safety system but once you get use to it it poses no problem. Both guns will last you and you children a few lifetimes.

Thanks for the response ! I'm open to other doubles as well......recoil isn't really an issue.

Well I know Rigby are working on their new double rifles, should not be long before they can take an order. You may wait a while, but it's a Rigby.

Just looked at the price on a new Rigby 95 000 Euro!!!!!!! Will stick with my Krieghoff for now:D

Heym , Verney Carron and Merkel , with Merkel most probably being the best value for money

however Heym is my favorite

I too studied the "affordable" doubles in your price range. I've decided against one for now but for the price I would have gone with Kreighoff in .500NE. For a custom made one the Verney Carron was good and the people were nice as well. I personally would never be interested in a gun that costs as much as a full bag DG Safari. So those white glove guys with the $100K guns can keep them.
Regards,
Philip

Thanks for all the responses.......now I just need to find someone with a great double who either hasn't found a use for it.....completed their safari already, or both, and can't stand the recoil.

Krieghoff now offers rifles with a standard non-auto safety. i stopped at their booth at the SCI show and they showed me a nice 500 NE with a traditional style safety.

i would say any of the brands mentioned here are good choices. Chapuis is another option that wasnt mentioned.

my strongest advice is to buy a new gun with a full waranty! ive had some pretty bad experiences and lost more money then i care to talk about.

I bought my VC in 500 NE two years ago and love it. I was a newbie to doubles as well. For the small difference in money. I would buy it new and have it built to fit you. You are going to be hunting dangerous game and you want it to feel completely natural when you pull it up and put it on target. Be careful, once you start, it is very very addicting.

Hi Matt. We were two booths over from the Krieghoff display at the Dallas SCI and that's where I got the itch. The rep was very helpful. Thanks for your input in my search.
