Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 in 99% Condition

Hey guys, this Leupold was bought new, mounted on my Sako 75 .338, sighted in, and then safed for several years (that seems to be how I roll, unfortunately). Anyway, I've obtained a VX-6 1-6x for it and so don't need this scope. In just the right light, there may be the slightest of a rear ring mark, but it's pretty hard to detect. Virtually as-new condition. I will sell with Butler Creek flip ups, shipped, for $275. Great DG rifle scope, as most know. Thanks for looking.

Thanks, guys. I priced it to move it. Paladin, I honestly can't remember, but I would say "several" years old. As far as quality compared to new, I think Leupold's current stuff is as good as they've ever made, which is very good indeed. Really can't answer properly, I'm afraid. All I know is that it's only been subjected to about 20 rounds and the inside of a safe over its entire lifetime!

Shuter any idea or documentation what the eye relief is? I love the illuminated reticles but have gone on a bit of a buying spree of big bore rifles lately and they need scopes which are starting to add up! So I'm considering this but need to research it some more.

I've been shooting my 505 Gibbs open sited so far and now I just bought a 458 Lott... Both have me concerned about eye relief!

Leupold has the best eye relief in the business. Without looking it up I believe its probably 4". This is a really good buy for a DG rifle.

Hi Bob, I'm thinking this is a good deal also. $399 seems to be the going price new. I am having the new Weaver Super Slam with a 30 mm tube installed on my .375 H%H in 3 weeks at my son's house. It currently has a Bausch and Lomb 3000 Elite (20 plus years old) on it. My RSM .416 doesn't have a scope. It has 25, 50 and 75 yard factory leaf iron sights on it. If I ever hunt with the .416 it will be for a buffalo cow in about 3 years, and currently thinking to go with those sights. I'll use the .375 on a plains game hunt next year. For the Lott and the Gibbs calibers, I would think (don't know because have never fired one) your eye relief would be of most importance. Do you think a 1 inch tube would suffice on that size gun, and for the type game you would be hunting with them? Just a question, I don't know the answer!

Bob, I understand your concerns.

As Wes said, the Leupold is probably around 4". Per Leupold's website the current model is 4.4 at low power and 3.7 at high.

I am in the same boat as you. If this scope had IR I would have bought it already. Even at a higher price.

Unless there is something strange, it should be a 1" tube. I believe the VX6 and VXR are the only 30mm tubes. You can check above.

Yep, it's a 1" tube. Also, per Leupold Custom Shop supervisor, eye relief is same as on most current models. 3.7-4.4". Bob, I'm paranoid as hell about getting cut, and while I own neither a Gibbs nor Lott (yet, I wouldn't hesitate to put this scope on one of them. Others with far more experience than I may have different opinions, and I'd defer to them, if so.

I currently have a 1.5 x 4 Swarovski on my RSM 416 Rigby. The power range is perfect for this caliber (my opinion). I have even used it on plains game out to 250yds with no problem. The Leupold in question is a quality scope that you will be happy with. As far as the eye relief, no other scope has more than Leupold in this type scope. The main thing in shooting a big bore rifle that has a scope mounted is actually two things: Correct mounting of the scope on the rifle and proper placement on your shoulder when mounting the rifle to shoot. When the scope is mounted on the rifle make sure it is in the high magnification setting. Set the scope as far forward as possible and still be comfortable with a full sight picture. Any shooting at a lower power setting will give you maximum relief from there. (Hope that makes sense). A lot of people that are not use to shooting big bore rounds with substantial kick tend to not focus on getting the butt of the stock on their shoulder. It tends to wind up more on the upper end of their arm or on the ball of their shoulder. With a lesser recoil this isn't a problem most of the time. With a big bore you must have it on the shoulder. With it firmly on the shoulder the recoil will take your head with the shoulder and avoid the scope contact. If you set the butt on the upper arm or ball of the shoulder, your arm will move backward without moving your head with it. This is when contact is made is made with the scope. (The other major time contact is made with the scope is made is shooting uphill or in the prone position. Both senarios are unlikely hunting DG. (Not impossible so be very cautious in these senarios with big bores that have a pretty good wallop!)
