These small caliber, using match bullet vs a good bonded drive me crazy

I shot 18 big game animals in the past two years here in Europe. Only bang-flops were with the 243 and 270. A lot goes into that, but even the mighty 10.3x68 RWS with RWS HITs kind of like a Barnes X had.

Made me rethink my lifelong mantra of a big heavy bullet.

Let's just say it is "a way" not necessarily "the way". You're entitled to your opinion...

There is a podcast, and I can't remember what podcaster it was that put it out. Aaron from Gunwerks who has killed several thousand big game animals is a fan of the 6mm, 6.5mm and 7mm bullets at 2800-3100 FPS and Hornady ELD X, ELD Match or Berger bullets. Even though he hates Berger the company.

It might have been on Jakes Unknown Munitions podcast.

I have about 800 10,3mm 260 Grain leaded boat tails. I am going to try them next year on cow elk.

Why were involved less than impressed with the Bondstrikes?
They didn’t grenade inside the animal and left a exit wound

I want a huge wound channel. I don't want a ton of recoil.

Something like a 338 Lapua with a 250 grain lead bullet would be ideal. But I don't want that recoil, so my 338 Lapua went down he road a long time ago. I love 30 caliber magnums with big bullets.

When you compare wound channels in gelatin from different bullets, diameters and speeds it is a good revelation. But every animal and every shot is different.

I love bang flops, but man the exact formula is hard to chase.

Guy shot a giraffe in our camp this last August with a 460 Rigby... tracked it 14 miles and couldn't find it, so which is worse? Bigger caliber isn't necessarily better....
That tends to happen if you shoot one in the foot instead of the vitals. 450 Rigby will penetrate to the vitals with even the worst hunting bullets available. Most small caliber bullets designed to fragment for varmits or designed for target shooting will not. There is a difference.

I see.

They did what Norma intended...Expand, hold together and drive through whatever is in front of them.

I’ve made a lot of documented kills with a .243 shooting Barnes TTSX 80 grain. I’m certain 3 of those reports are available here on AH if it matters to anyone.

I’ll continue to use it as long as it kills effectively…

Im with the "match the bullet and the caliber to the quarry" guys...

I shoot TTSX and TSX out of almost everything from 243 to 416... sure theyre spendy.. but they are accurate out of my rifles and they perform under pretty much any/all circumstances as long as they still have a little speed on them when they impact...

that said, I recently picked up a 22-250... assuming they shoot well out of it, Im guessing I'll be either shooting some sort of thin jacketed match bullet or the hornady v-max out of it.. the intended quarry is prarie dogs at distances of 300-500 yards... the kill zone is about 3".. precision is the most important part of that game.. and I dont need a whole lot of straight line penetration...

if/when I take it after coyotes, Im guessing I'll find a ttsx load that it likes and use that (much closer shots, and a larger kill zone.. I can afford a little bit of accuracy loss.. and dont need the "explosive" aspect of the v-max)...

Some strong bias on display here, apparently based on YouTube and podcast which must create content in order to make cash.
The guy that shot the giraffe owns the website rockslide. Another guy on that hunt owns Unknown Munitions and other gun companies.

Their YouTube presence is not their money maker.

@Muskox
What happened to the old adage " if'n it's still standin keep a shootin till it ain't "
Bob
My take is they were trying to prove a point, at the animals expense. They should have kept shooting, especially when using such a small bullet on a large animal. It begins to look like a stunt to a degree due to them watching and not shooting till it drops.

I haven’t watched that in awhile. I have a potty mouth but I don’t appreciate that vid. I mostly like those guys and contribute on their website. Anyway, regarding the lack of the follow up….did the PH tell him to shoot again?

Same.

Not sure about what the PH may or may not have said. Don’t plan to watch it again to find out.

Hello,

I saw your post selling left hand rifles. Do you have any additional pics of the .416 Rem mag?

Thank you.
