Pump Rifle

Brother in law had a 760 in 30-06. We never checked the accuracy of it but every year you could count on a number of deer and a elk in the freezer.

It also had open sights and if the animal was within 200 yards it was dead.

I about fell over when he showed up one year with a bolt action and a scope.

My dad was an old time gunsmith, custom loader who worked up and loaded for dozens of other guys, center fire pump guns. More repairs, headaches and pie plate sized groups than all the other actions put together. Couldn't even fathom taking one across the big pond to the dark continent ... just my two bits.
Not my first choice for Africa either, but I CAN imagine taking one. This guy built a 7600 in a .375x62 wildcat and used it in Africa on lion and elephant.

My dad loved these things. And got me and my brother one each when we turned 12. I remember mine most when it went “click” on a smoker blacktail buck when I was 14 on a special junior hunt… the buck jumped off and was never seen again. Turns out mine was out of time and unless you pumped it back with decent amount of force it would not grab a shell from the magazine. My mother bought me a beautiful M77 Hawkeye in 30-06 for my 16th birthday and I never went back!

He could have saved some coin, by choosing the .375 Scovill, which is basically the same—9.3x62 derived—cartridge BUT people are people. Dave Scovill created that cartridge for the modern Miroku-made Winchester Model 95.

Well, semi-autos are illegal, so this might be the next best thing.
As far as useful--The Benoits of Maine/Vermont use them, so case closed!!!! There will never be a deer stalking family like that, ever, period. Love their books, too.

One of the reason I want one is because it's the only kind of pump action I can have legally (can't have a pump shotgun) but I don't want to look into getting one if it's ONLY purpose in my ownership would be "It's a pump action that's why I have it" (I don't keep guns I don't use unless they are of a vintage nature).

I figured a short barrel pump rifle ""sounds"" like a good choice for dense bush / jungle hunting.

I’ve always been interested in them as a lefty but have the conception that they wouldn’t be as accurate as a bolt action. Is there such thing as a sub-MOA pump?
Pump rifles aren’t meant for long range.
My automatic rem 30-06 is plenty accurate for woods.

There are other pumps if you can find them. That might give you other cartridge options
Browning made one for a little while bpr
There are 22lr and 22m ones

And I believe there were Copies of the colt lighting in 45 44-40 and 357 mag

And I believe Taurus made the timber Wolf in 357 and 44 mag including some ss models.
I Tryed to fine the 44 ss carbine version when I was around 19 for a close in hog rifle.

I have two, a 7600 carbine 30-06 and a 7600 rifle in 270.

Both will put three shots from a cold barrel in an inch at 100 yards.

Worst one I’ve had was a 2 moa 30-06, best one shot close to half moa.

They have a free floating barrel that was made to the same standards as a M700 barrel.

If you get the trigger tuned, they are really useful rifles.

But I’ve owned 6, all 7600s, so your mileage may vary.

I have one of the rem 7615 rifles in .223. Its very accurate but a real pain, very finicky with mags, doesn't always pick up a round. Handy light rifle for a lot of things though.

I had a 7600 in 30-06 back in the late 70's. The pump action forestock had a bit of movement left and right making it a bit of a pain to get a consistent hold. I ended up trading it for a 740 in 30-06.

I actually prefer the older pre-68 760s for this reason. Prior to 1968 the 760 rifles had a full length tube that the fore end rode on. When the 760 Carbine was introduced it had a short telescoping tube assembly that all 760s (and the later 7600) were built with after 1968. The shorter telescoping tube saves weight, but the fore end is not as rigid.

One of those people is you? How old are you?
I turned 74 year old this 3rd August. Picture is from 1972. I'm on the far right. The picture is from my first day of duty as a ranger for the Department Of Forests.

I graduated in "Principles Of Forestry" from the Pakistani Forest Institute at the University Peshawar in 1970. This is my graduation photograph.

I have a 760 in 30-06, had my mom buy it for me cause I couldn't yet, in 1973. It was MOA at 100, and if you liked it, was faster than an auto, and the iron sites were damn near as good as the scope for whatever reason. Still have it, still use it and if there was ever a brush gun, that would be it.

Winchester sell the SXR2 Pump Rifle models, shown here with a .30-06 10rnd magazine & 21in barrel.

My father in law has hunted with a 760 in 308 since the mid 70’s… he only owns two hunting rifles.. the 760 that is his “deer gun” and a rem 700 bdl in 7mm Rem Mag that’s he’s owned since the mid 80’s that is his “elk gun”… he has killed more game with that 760 than I have taken in my entire life with all of my firearms I’d guess… it’s served him incredibly well…

To my knowledge he’s never had to fix or repair it in any way… and he’s not exactly a stickler for cleaning or maintenance.. but the rifle just keeps going and going…

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
