Blaser doesn't offer a r8 barrel in the caliber. Looking for a barrel for night hunting pigs and coyotes over green light.

Any available options and experiences?

1. Tip Burton at Texas sporting arms. Uses proof barrel with Akila shank.
2. J sipp

Both have been great for me.

I would go 22 creedmoor and use 69gr eldvt.

I shoot a lot of pigs each year. A .308 with a Barnes TTSX 130 is my preferred first choice. The .300 Blackout/AAC is weak sauce in comparison. The only reason to pick a .300 Blackout is for use in an AR-15. For a bolt action, .308 is the better choice for pigs.

Btw - ribs with the backstrap left on are really good and worth the effort to salvage a few. Put them in foil, coat with BBQ sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s is quite good) of choice in a large slow cooker/crock pot. Cook until very tender, 6+ hours in ours for a large thick rack.

Thx guys. Not married to the caliber, but it's the quietest I know of that's reasonably powerful enough for small game.

It seems easier to just buy another rifle in .300 blk. I say this as an owner of two R8s. I agree on the superiority of the .300 for suppressed use.

This. 300blk just doesn’t have the terminal performance. Lost quite a few hogs and yotes with it before switching to 6.8spc with much better results.

I’m ha-pay with my Palehorse R8 barrels if your looking for an aftermarket barrel

300BLK excels in the AR platform with a suppressor but the same things that make it great, also hamper it. It’s a short quiet cartridge that’s great for close contact. At ranges 75 and over on hogs it’s underpowered compared to the 308WIN that’s also available on an AR-10 platform.

If you are looking for a hog specific R8 barrel, the 308WIN would be a prime choice with lots of inexpensive ammo available and many bullet choices. However you can probably source a complete 308WIN AR rifle for the same money as a Blaser R8 barrel.

And I say this as an unabashed Blaser fan.

The 300BLK is a great subsonic hog killer BUTT only on animals that are not alerted to your presence and at 50 yards or less. From a blind over a feeder and a Hoglight, it's just the ticket.

For fleeting shots on hogs that have their adrenaline up, something larger is a good idea.

If the intent is to get Hollywood quiet so that you can make follow up shots on a sounder, even though the R8 is super fast to cycle, I’m not sure it’s fast enough…

While your shots will be quiet the impact of those 220gr subsonics on the pig creates quite the “thud” and if you’re within reliable killing range with subsonics the pigs are definitely going to hear you cycling the action as well…

Not saying do t do it… a suppressed subsonic 300blk R8 would probably be a lot of fun..

Just saying if you’re wanting to get 2-3 additional shots on a sounder before they scramble, a 16”, fairly heavy (reduce muzzle flip to next to nothing) 300 blk AR or other reliable MSR (I’ve got a buddy with a 300blk 16” SCAR thst is a pig killing machine) is the way to go…

My primary pig gun is an AR10 308 suppressed with a thermal…it’s far from Hollywood quiet.. it’s at best just “hearing safe”.. but it is flat out deadly on even the biggest boars… but… try as I may, at best I’m getting 2 accurate shots on a sounder before they’re scrambling… anything more than that is a bit of a spray and pray..

My backup is a 16” AR15 in 300blk that has a LVPO and a simple green light mounted on it.. it is also suppressed… its actually a much more fun gun to shoot.. especially with subsonics.. I may start using it more… the limitation is where I e been hunting lately the blind where pigs most often come to the feeder is a bit long even for SuperSonics in a 300blk … it’s about 140 to the feeder… with subsonics I’d have to rainbow them in…

Two true statements.
1. Quiet
2. Underpowered for hogs and deer.

Truly quiet is below 1125 fps. Too slow to hunt if you need a blood trail in thick woods.

I have had 2 .300 blackouts. Sold one and about to sell the other. I'm not sure what they are good for except in an AR.

These two bucks thought the 300BO was very effective! Both 200lb deer. I use Barnes 110gr TAC bullets. Within its range limitations of around 150yds, it kills like a 308 on deer. Not sure about hogs.

Exactly. The 220-240gr subsonics hit hard, but take forever to get there. Even then, it's only going to be one shot before chaos erupts. At my place in Florida, it's so brushy, you aren't getting more than on shot. In more open areas you might get 2-3 shots, but only with a semi-auto.

Subsonic is a gimmick for the most part. For night hunting you want flat and fast.
Unless you have neighbors.

If I lit off a mag full of 308 Winchester from my AR-10 at a group of fleeing hogs at midnight, my neighbors 800yards away might not call the Cops, but It's a safe bet they'll want to have a conversation about it the next day! :A Naughty:

Subsonic and suppressed at midnight is just being polite.

Thx guys.
I didn't think about the impact noise alerting them. That kind of kills the whole vision I had of this.

Maybe I'll just put a different gas plug and the tbac on the FAL for pig duty.

I don’t know that I would own an r8 in that small of a caliber. I had a 223 and it didn’t work very well. It shot amazing but it’s cycle like trash.

Thanks greatly! I'm leaving for the holidays so won't be around until 8 December. If that works I'll be appreciative. Address is Mason Reid, 1504 Driftwood Drive, Bozeman, MT 59715.

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
