I built a 416 Taylor in 1998 out of a Ruger 77 tang safety in 458 Win it was a brutal rifle in 458 , Douglas bbl same profile as the 458 fitted the same open sights ,i got the sights from the Australian Ruger distributor & sold the 458 bbl, got Redding dies, made brass out of 458 & 338 Win it fed well, & was much more easy to shoot than the 458 . in a fit of stupidity i sold it to buy something else i now regret selling it.

I find few things worse than selling a gun and then regretting it later. As much as I like to think of guns as tools, they have far more soul than a cordless drill.

Adore my kids and exceedingly happy with my wife. Wouldn't be able to replace them.

If the wife dies first, I am not interested in anything other than throwing rocks at women. Go hunting and work, and do stuff with my kids.

They are 10-25. Maybe when the youngest is as old as the oldest. I will stop throwing rocks at them.

I read another thread about the 416 Taylor Improved and this motivated me to looked into the Redding Die I bought, 416 Taylor "standards" and the Norma cases.
Wow!
Redding confirmed their sizing die are per Manson 416 Taylor standard Magnum.
Then there is the CIP spec. that appears to follow the A-Square Manual. Ok
But when I measure photo of the Norma 416 Taylor brass, i get
neck diameter of 0.440 and neck length of 0.366 vs CIP of 0.448 and 0.416!
Now, it was commented the Improved version had steeper shoulder and a photo showed a short neck.
Below is CIP cartridge spec (with thinner neck diameter of 0.440)
and Manson Reamer (in blue)

All is good. An expanded view around the shoulder does show if a rifle is chamber with the Manson, might improve Norma brass??? Although it was mentioned that factory ammo was improved

After all this, sounds like the Norma brass and Manson reamer are matched. Would be great if one of our Illustrious Taylor aficionados could measure Norma brass neck diameter and length and base head to the start of the shoulder, I will then update the drawings Thanks

Update. Just got Norma brass from Raven Rocks. thank you sir!
Measured dimensions and case capacity to see how it matched up to the Manson reamer.
Case capacity was 93.3gns, case weight 209.4gns. Not sure who came first "the chicken or the egg",
but they are a match. The reamer allows for a bit longer case length.
I should note that Redding confirmed their die is cut for the Manson reamer.
My previous post just extrapolated the case from the reamer dimensions, i was off a tad.
below shows the measured case and the reamer, much better match.

Saw a “Sammi” reamer print that matches Asquare drawing with the longer neck, shorter body and 25 deg shoulder. So I guess the Manson reamer is the “improved” version?

I just check Midway, out of stock. But I called Redding 2 weeks ago. They will have 416 Taylor dies ready in 8 to 10 weeks.

So I recently posted asking about the .416 Ruger vs the .416 rem mag. I’m really itching for a big bore. Now the reason I had asked about the .416 Ruger was that I have a Ruger m77 II in .300 win that really doesn’t leave the safe. It’s nice. Classic walnut and blued steel and all that. It’s really at this point just become my Africa rifle as I have other rifles for my North American hunts which tend to be rougher affairs calling for things like carbon fiber and cerakote. Anyways to say all that due to availability of brass for the .416 Ruger and such I stumbled on the .416 Taylor. I had never heard of it before but I started wondering if anyone had necked .458 win mag down to .416 and lo and behold here we are. The reason I want the .416 caliber is that I want a bit of do all rifle for Africa but I have buffalo planned eventually and while I know the .375 H&H does the job I also know that many in here have touted the .416 caliber’s as hitting buffalo with much more authority. Looking at load data a 350gr ttsx at 2400fps would make a solid plains game load for some of the bigger animals like wildebeest and Eland (which is probably top of my list on my next trip) and loaded with a 400 gr northfork at 2300 would be a solid buff round.

So I guess what’s the thought on the .416 Taylor. Yay or nay? Are the velocities real or aspirational? Just seems like .458 win brass is easy to find and even headstamped .416 Taylor is out there.

Just for curiosity I took a 458 win and put 70 grains of each of those powders in them and then I sat a 400 grain TSX(which is the only bullet I will load for African hunts other than for elephant) in the case on top of the powder, just to see how much powder compression I am going to have. Just eyeballing it, there is going to be a full half inch of compression. That is way more than I want for the heat of Africa. I did the same with 76 grains of Varget in the 416 Rem and had about ⅛ " of compression, that along with the fact that the 416 Rem can easily achieve 2400 fps with the 400 grain TSX, has led me to chose the 416 Rem. There is also extremely limited load data for the. 400 grain bullets in the Ruger, whereas there is an abundance of data for the Rem.

I went back on Midway USA site. They still show them available. (416 Taylor brass). Like I said I bought 40 more.

How about tamping and spinning the case slowly after charging it with powder. I know the powder column will settle. How much compression then? What OAL are you trying to achieve that fits in the magazine and chambers?

I did tap case on bench, was going to the last pressure band, same as what I do on the Rem, never thought to determine OAL properly

I suggest you first get some loaded ammo from Hendershots, Superior Ammo or other custom loaders. Test your rifle for function and chronograph these loads.

Get 3 reloading manuals and read all three for the process of reloading. Each cover the basics but offer some finer points on their own.

The LEE Reloading Manual is good start and contains some 416 Taylor loads. Lyman Reloading Manual is easy to read and a must for the basics of reloading. Third choices can be Speer, Hornady, or Nosler.

Each will list the needed equipment and supplies needed. Hornady, Lee, RCBS, Redding are good brands.
Read the reviews as some specific tools are better regarded than others.

If you can connect with a shooter reloader in your area, do it.
Offer a couple of steak dinners for a veteran reloader to help you get set up.

Money well spent. It will save time and can enhance safety.

Read each manual carefully at least twice. Keep a manual for reference by your reloading bench. Measure, check specs and double check.
Go slow when you are starting out.
I'm a bit old school, so I learned this way. I'm sure there are YT videos that can help.
