480 RUGER AND 350 LEGEND GO TO SOUTH AFRICA

Haha sorry I wasn’t meaning to be disrespectful by the Women Children, Small men thing & was afraid it might come across that way, not my intent at all, I’m fine with low recoil, light rifles, I meant easy to carry do a lot of work at closer range for learners & myself but in a cool do anything rifle, if you had read what I wrote I was making a 357 Maximum Rimmless which would be from a cut off 223 case, I should of said the rest it would be in a 358 barrel, not that that matters as long as the throat allows the release of the bullet from the cartridge it would be fine in a .357 barrel, getting a little tighter in a .355/9mm barrel but I suspect still ok if throated correctly ?

Would have tested all this by now but time shoots off at an alarming rate !

If you were to read up on what the .357 Maximum could do hand loaded in a rifle it might be a surprise, the reason I first looked at a Rimmless in a nice little bolt gun, almost a .35 Rem that could use modern pointed bullets, great pity Winchester went way off track .

Sorry to go off the thread so much, apologies !

No offense taken! The 357 maximum is a bonkers cool cartridge! I think it's kinda hilarious how it's saami spec is case length 1.605 making it technically illegal to use in some straight wall states by .005 inches. I imagine no officer would measure that precise and it would be fine pretty much everywhere however. I've heard of people loading it in rifles or rifle-like pistols and getting some really impressive speeds out of it!

I will also drop this to stay on topic, as a final note some great animals OP nice shooting

I returned from my very first African Safari on July 12th. I took 2 handguns with me. My .480 Ruger SRH with 7.5 barrel and 4x Leupold scope on it. Other pistol was a S&W X frame in .350 Legend, 7.5 barrel, Holosun EPS carry Green dot. I took 7 animals total. 5 with the .480 and 2 with the .350. I was shooting Underwood 300gr Extreme Penetrators out of the .480 and Barnes 170gr. FB TSX bullets out of the .350 Legend. Both worked great . I took a Blesbok, Impala, Gemsbok, Kudu, and Bushbuck with the .480. Kudu being the biggest animal, it was a 40 yard shot and only made it 25 yards before piling up. Quartering away shot and full penetration. Gemsbok only made it 25 yards also. With .350 I took a Blue Wildebeest and a Warthog. Found a perfectly mushroomed bullet just under the hide of the Wildebeest and got full penetration on a quartering away shot on the Wart hog. Thought this was going to be a once in a lifetime hunt, but already planning on going back.
Great post, thank you for the information.

May I ask what outfitter you hunted with?

Dumukwa Safaris. Great place. I plan on going back.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
