Favorite cartridge/rifle for moose

My last ten or so have been with my .338 Marlin Express. Prior to that was mostly my .300 WM. My largest bull was with a .35 Remington. It's like with anything else: the right bullet, shot placement, and personal restraint.

I’ve only hunted AK, Yukon moose. as said repeatedly above. If hit correctly they do die easily, they seem to stand still and just take more lead till they tip over.

I think terrain matters in selecting cartridge. Up on the Alatna where I have all my experience, long shots (300yds.+) should be expected. So I have always carried my .338 & .375h&h. Down south in the Talkeetnas a lot of guys use…whatever they have. And that works, because around the Su drainage it’s closer work. But, I’d never take a .30-06 solely up to the brooks range. Ever. YMMV.

Years ago I read about a Yukon Moose hunt in a hunting magazine. Two guys in camp, one using a 270 the other a 375 H&H. The guy with the 270 against the advice of the outfitter brought the 270. It took him several shots to put the moose down. Poor bullets, poor shooting etc. The writer used a 375, one shot and done.
The Native American guide who had not spoken a complete sentence the whole trip, told the writer something along the lines of “Dat 375 is a damn fine moose gun.”
I was going to moose hunt I would take one of my 375 Rugers.

Marlin MXLR, .338 Marlin Express. I had doubts about the FTX bullets at first but not anymore. The seven bulls I've killed were one shot affairs. Prior to acquiring my MXLR I had used a Ruger 77 in .300 WinMag. and it worked just dandy. My largest bull came via a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington.

Yes, moose is fabulous table fare; it's a regular part of my meals several times a week.

How do you like the 338m?
When they came out I only saw 1 locally and the gun shop wanted a big premium for it.

I can believe poor shooting and poor bullets. My hunting buddy, his two oldest sons each took their first moose with a .270, with handloads I put together with Partitions. The first was a 40" bull from a hundred yards - one shot, a Mossberg doing the job. The other was a 50" bull from close to 200 yards with a Tikka. Same result. The .270 (and a lot of other calibers) are fine, with good bullets and good shot placement.

The .338 Marlin has been stellar for me for moose, caribou, and African PG. The surprise for me has been the factory ammo; I was skeptical of it at first but not anymore. I got lucky: I picked up mine on GunBroker for 700 bucks when they first came out.

My very European answer would be the 358 Norma, 9.3x64, 9.3x74R in a double rifle, and 9.3x62.

I have shot exactly zero moose, but I have owned all these rifles and currently own these and quite a few more in that moose range.
