Good Gun Deals This Week

Would this be a good platform for some Jen to upgrade? Seems like a decent price.

It really depends on the upgrades. If it involves restocking and adding iron sights, I think you are better off starting with a Model 70 etc. with sights and an acceptable stock. The Whitworth actions are solid, but I would state they are what they are—solid entry level rifles. I know they have been utilized by some talented smiths for very nice builds, but this is not commonplace.

I don’t follow Whiitworths, but I do not recall seeing one (in .375 etc) without iron sights. They could be commonplace, as again, I don’t follow them, but I certainly don’t remember seeing one. If you like synthetic stocks and want an entry-level rifle, I don’t think this is a bad choice at all. I just think there are better starting points if you’re trying to do something nice.

I agree with RR and would add if you want a 2 or 3 position Winchester style safety, barrel band, etc as well the cost will accumulate quickly. The Whitworth line represented the higher end of the Zastava actioned rifles, you might consider making them an offer and see if they’ll bite.

Cabela’s/Bass Pro has a good number of Zastava action Mausers currently in the Safari calibers.

FWIW, my Whitworth 375 H&H was my first big bore I bought for a DG trip. It is very accurate, just as accurate as any of my other big bores running factory ammo, but feeding the entire mag took some work (a bit of time and a little cost). The rifle didn't make the trip as I decided to take "more gun" in a 458 Lott for buffalo, and a 9.3x62 for everything else (both CZ 550s). That said, if in the market for an entry level 375, I think the Whitworth is a good option, but personally I prefer my CZ 550s to my Whitworth, which is typically a little more money but can still be found for a similar price and the CZ is better value in my opinion.

I have two of these in 375H&H in their original factory configuration; which by comparison to the gun listed, means that mine still have their factory wooden stock and open sights. They are good quality rifles overall, and one of the best values on the market when it comes to an introductory-level safari rifle

Whoever removed the sights from this rifle and put it in a synthetic stock took away a lot of the utility and market value from the gun (in my opinion). It will take a bit of investment to have a gunsmith to replace the open sights, and to perform other potential improvements; and it's not a worthwhile proposition at that asking price. If I were in your shoes, the only way I would consider buying it as a starting platform would be at somewhere between 50-60% of that asking price.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn’t actually interested in buying it I already have a 375 that I like a lot. Was more just curious on opinions on the gun and price.

I do find it interesting so many view the lack of open sights as a deal breaker. I don’t really care if a bolt gun has them or not. Doubles would obviously be a different story.

Man, you northern boys have seemingly limited our access to Elwood Epps. Or perhaps my wife has me blocked. :-)

Yeah. Wes at Epps needs a beating with a rubber hose. The problem: Americans buying sh@t they cannot own. They ruined the fun for everyone.

The solution: Block the damned Americans.

What went wrong: Americans can buy all the bullets they want, but they cannot buy brass, primers, or ammo. They kept buying things they cannot buy.

A few times a year, Amoskeag Auction up in New Hampshire has either a live or timed auction that I've been able to pick up a few interesting items at. For August, they didn't have anything I needed & were really short on left-handed rifles (i.e. I didn't see any).

But it might be worth a perusal as they did have a few uncommon items. In no particular order, here's some random selections that I thought were interesting. Since they were all for my "wrong" shoulder, I didn't examine each one very closely:

Austrian 3-barrel set by Karl Hauptmann

Pre-64 Winchester 70 in 6mm Remington with some nice looking wood

CZ 550 in 300 Win Mag

I don't see a lot of centerfire Anschutz rifles so this 22 Hornet Model 1730D was uncommon

The timed auction usually has lower-priced items. It has a Mark X Whitworth in 300 Win Mag

Looks like the DRs need work, hopefully the bidders factor that cost in. I’m glad I have no need to the Westley Richards DRs

Im drooling on those magazine rifles. Both the Winchesters and Westley Richards. I would happily buy one of the WR bolt guns if they go for slightly below the estimated prices.

For those of us unwashed vagabonds, can you clarify why you believe the DR's need some work?
