Ideal weight for a rifle chambered in 577 NE 3"

My Army Navy 577 weighed 13.5 and recoil was vicious. I think I would go 16 or 18 and stay close to the truck, but in my world I passed on the 577 and got by just fine with a 416 Rem,404, and a 450-400-3" on those long walks and a strong young body..That was a long time back but I was 86 on my last safari and that was with Saeed..thats been awhile back. those days are missed. I used my 470 Searcy on that safari and it was a bit heavy for me..

VC in 577 = ~14.6#

im looking at having a rifle chambered in 585 HE built which I plan to load at 2050-2100 fps to duplicate or slightly exceed the 577 NE 3" cartridge.

I don't have much experience with the 577 NE cartridge so im hoping you guys might suggest a proper weight for this rifle. my first thought was 12 pounds but after some thought im unsure.

thoughts?

Matt, MNR built a 600 Overkill. This was built to customer spec's. 20" Barrel 9.5lbs
MNR suggested, "they" would've built it @ 12.5lbs. (Assuming? with a Muzzle Brake as well)

idk if this helps.

My Heym 577 NE will be 13 1/2 pounds.

From my experience owning two 500 NE one 11.5 and one 12 i would say easily 12 pounds. To me however, the real question is what will you hunt? As an example hunting elephant can be 15-20 miles per day. Can you comfortably carry a 12+ rifle that distance for 14 days? it is for that reason i finally settled on an 11 pound 470 JJ is fixing for me and I carry a 15 pound cardio steel bar on all my bikes to prepare me for an elephant type hunt

They let you ride a bike to hunt elephant now? Does it have a rack on the handle bars? :D Beer Bottle:

My 2 bobs worth having shot many 577 3 inch NE doubles 14 pounds is ideal . For 500NE doubles 12 pounds and for 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery about 11 pounds . A lot of weight to hump around but very good to shoot .

Some serious thread necromancy here guys... I posted this question back in 2015. Somebody revived it again in 2020, and now again in 2023!

@PCC600 I agree with your recommended weights.

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
