I get it. Fancy dandy rifles all shiny and super grade wood.

How about showing of your work horse, jane plain tool, well worn rifle?

For me, i enjoy a simple working rifle.
Diy peep sights, sure no safe queen. Chopped barrel and buttstock 1895
Schlepped that around 50days a year trough about avery nasty thicket you could imagine.

Or the trusty ol Mauser 98 i grew up with 40years ago

Would love to see your well worn , old but trusty workhorses

My dads Remington 788 in 243 that I inherited. Tasco wide angle 6x scope, sighted in at 100yd with 100gr corelokts, not worried about dragging it through the bush!

This thread speaks to me.
I’m having trouble posting pics of my dad’s old Remington 742 with chewed up receiver rails. I “fixed” it by blocking the gas port and converting it from semiauto to single-shot. It’s perfect for hunting spikes etc.

This is the Springfield 03A3 my dad and a coworker sporterized back in 1962. It became my gun two years later when I was old enough to hunt. Shot this bull with it in 1980.

The next year my horse rolled on me and I had to restock it. Until recently it looked like this.

A few years ago I rebarreled it, changed the safety and striker, added iron sights, upgraded the scope and rings, and had it reblued. Getting it ready for the next generation

Thought about restocking it but decided to keep the old one. It has stories to tell.

I Bubba-ized both my go-to shotguns. Bought this 870 Wingmaster magnum nearly new from a HS classmate in 1968. It broke down two walnut stocks before I switched to synthetic. Had to retire it years ago when I was having retina problems.

Then I bought a 1972 Browning A5 Magnum Twelve (with later Miroku barrel) and also used up the wood on both ends of it. This is the gun I now use for everything: waterfowl, uplands, skeet, trap, and clays. Someday I hope to shoot a turkey with it.

I mostly just have workhorse rifles I only own two wood stocked rifles. A Ruger M77 Hawkeye II in .300 win mag and my grandpas old Remington 760 game master in .30-06.

My two go to workhorse rifles are my AR in 5.56 and my semi-custom Rem 700 in 7-08ai. Neither are pretty and I am not afraid to get either one muddy. I find myself using the AR more and more these days for anything deer size and down. For mule deer on up I reach for the 7-08ai. I also have a browning hells canyon .300 win mag for just killing big stuff like elk at long range.

Frankly, I'm not a safe queen sort of gun owner. I hunt with everything I have. And I don't have the finances to purchase truly 'fine' firearms, or rather, I allocate my resources to other types of gear and actually hunting. Living in rural Alaska, I do have some I baby a bit more, such as my Savage 99EG, or my Remington 141. They are in good condition and I want to keep them that way, so I cherry pick the days when I take them out to hunt.

My work horse is also my favorite gun... my go-to rifle. It's a Marlin MXLR in .338 Marlin Express. At times - not consciously so mind you - I borderline abuse it. It was purpose bought with the idea that the stainless and laminate would be impervious to Alaska, and with minimal care it has been just that. I have killed a fair number of animals with it; in fact, I have never shot at something with it I didn't kill.

I shot my first deer with a Ruger 44 Carbine like yours. The one I used had a 4x fixed scope.

M1A busting brush. Never fails, haven’t cleaned in maybe 2 years with about 10 hog hunts. Never had an issue.
