USA: Hunt With Pope Bros In Texas

Hitch, congrats on a very successful hunt !

Also, thank-you for posting this report.

I've been lookig for something very similar to do for myself, particularily an Aodad hunt.
I'm in the U.S each year around the convention time when all the shows are on and am looking for a hunt to combine with these visits.

I'll be looking at Pope Bros web site in detail for a good free range hunt.

Thanks again for posting.

Paul.

No problem, that is exactly why I post. Although I have so far not had any bad experience I am always a bit nervous going into a hunt with a new outfitter. Its nice to know exactly what kind of experience others have had.

Aoudad definitely has my attention! They are beautiful animals and a hard earned trophy, perfect in my books.

Definitely a lot of game... I miss hunting in the hill country. Grew up hunting there and in west, but not far west, Texas.

Cool country, I have not experienced west Texas yet but hopefully I soon will. And hopefully it will be on a 1:10,000,000 Desert sheep hunt! LOL keep dreaming right.

Congratulations! It sounds like you had a great hunt. Thanks for sharing the story and photos.

.....

im sorry brick but l giggled a we bit when you posted your coment .
its one bitterness l will only ever be able to wish to have ,
but l reckon it must taste as bitter as cats piss ,

Glad you got a chuckle. I do.

I'm actually glad I did not screw the next hunt up by being greedy and sitting at a poor time and scaring the cat off.
Have to be able to laugh.

Whacking two sheep instead of one! Get pissed off or laugh.
Christine will take a little abuse but, some times luck is not with you.

Next time.....

Exactly what a decent report does for a fellow hunter.
Teaches you that Texas and Vegas are in different time zones than home! :doh2:

The only time I was at all perturbed was when Christine shrugged it off at first. sometimes shit happens and we need to learn from it and move on, im just glad it happened at a time when a bit of money could fix it. Wardens do not have the same sense of humor for these things that ranchers do. I guarantee she will be watching behind her target far more carefully in the future.

The other beginner issue that she certainly learned from on this trip was when we were looking for the Blackbuck and a pack of dogs, we don't know whos or why they were there, ran a sounder of hogs past us. Christine stepped out in front of everyone, picked a pig, began to raise her gun, took the safety off (while her finger was inside the trigger guard) and killed a defenceless dirt clump half way to the hog. To her credit she made sure her gun was pointed in a safe direction and it was safe to remove the safety before doing so. In her excitement she pulled a stunt that I grilled her on extensively when she 1st started shooting, a habit that obviously still was buried in her subconscious. This incident rattled her greatly (as it should) but those present made sure to let her know that although she had made a mistake she had all the precautions in place to ensure that no one could have been hurt. I guarantee she will never do that again! She was almost inconsolable immediately after it happened.

Nothing like an unexpected discharge to get her attention.
She should be rattled and it will create respect.
I hope she gains her confidence back slowly and maintains that new found respect.

The consequences are a little different at home when you have a spare animal and no tag.
"Oops" does not usually cut it.

Losing your license for a year or three and fines put a real twist into the hunt planning.
With reciprocal bans in many states and provinces you no longer get to escape those mistakes.

I'll bet she does not do an unintentional double ever again either. :)

Luckily it happened on day 1 and she was able to gain her confidence back over the remainder of the hunt. Excitement can get the best of us. I will never forget hearing "I want the spotted one BANG" then the look on her face. Not cool but fortunately no harm done either.

Thanks for the detailed hunt report. I will consider going a predator hunt with them.

Thanks for sharing :)
Great looking Blackbuck.
A Blackbuck is very high on my wish list :)

Thanks, Christine is dying to finally put her hands on him!

If they are on your list, we left plenty of them there for you!

I have been looking at their web site and I think that I need to start saving up money or hopefully win in Lotto so I can go there and hunt some animals.
Blackbuck will for sure be the one I will try to get first.
How good do you think my chances would be to get one with a bow at that place?

They hunt many ranches, both high and low fence. Blackbuck tend to move in herds so stalking would be tough, on the other hand they move a lot during mid-day so getting ahead and ambushing them should be quite doable, not to mention extremely fun, plus they have blinds set up in some places that would be high percentage. I know I could have killed a good buck with a bow, maybe when I hunt mine I will try it.

Hey Paul....February/March is the best time to hunt Aoudad here in Texas. You might look at a Nilgai hunt down in deep South Texas too. I've got an Aoudad but if you want to do the Nilgai let me know. I'll go with you.

Sorry Diamondhitch!....I forgot to say great report! I've done quite a bit of guiding here in Texas and that is a really, really good Blackbuck! I can understand why Christine was disappointed until they found him.

Hey BB, a Nilgai would be neat too !, but I've still got the wants on one of those neat Aodads !!
Sorry for off topic to main thread.

Thanks.

She was more disappointed over wounding him period, regardless of size. I will be interested though to see just how big he is when he arrives.

The other bad thing about not finding him right away is that as a taxidermist, I really would like to have gone over him and made some notes since I have never seen one before and she wants a lifesize mount. Pictures are good but there is no replacement for actual hands on "playing with dead things" as my mother used to put it. :D

No worries. If I only spoke/posted when I was on topic, I would be a very quiet man. LOL

Wow, that Blackbuck is a toad!

Glad you had a great time in Texas!
