Hi all,
I am having trouble with my 9.3x62 Full length sizing die jamming.
The down stroke is ok but half way down the up stroke when the case is half out, it jams. I can move it but only with considerable force. This happens with every case. I am using Hornady spray case lube, have cleaned the die and can’t see anything else untoward about the die. The cases seem fine when they come out.

Would appreciate any ideas or other things to check?

Cheers,
Dan

Take the decapping rod out.
Place it in a lathe or drill.
Use 1000grit water paper to smoothen the expanderball, then 0000 steelwool, and finally a patch with some burnishing compound.

I use G&G case wax or Redding wax, and use a brush to apply some in the neck. You wouldn’t even take a thou off the expander button, but that smoother surface will glide through your necks.

All good suggestions. Also, you can remove the decapping pin/neck expander spindle altogether. Replace that two part operation wth a universal decapping die and a Lyman M die. This will forever solve the sizing, seizing, galling issues described. This will also prevent any possible case stretching during the neck expanding stroke.

Annealing the shoulder/neck will also help.

Clean the cases in a tumbler after decapping and aneal necks if needed

Spray the lube in the neck, I line up all the case neck facing me. Hold the can at a 45° angle spray the case and inside the neck. Roll the cases 180° and repeat (allows for full coverage inside and out).

Probably need to use case neck brush with a powder lube such as motor mica. It's 'jamming' during the case neck expansion on the upstroke.

+1 with this recommendation.

I have been thinking about the universal recapping die. Will get one. Cheers

I had this happen similarly with Hornady FL dies a couple times. Got rid of a 375 Ruger die because of that problem. I tried smoothing it out with 1000 grit, but I think it’s just the design of the expander ball and shape. I have since switched to using Lee or Redding with no complaints. The Lee die has a longer taper upon entry and exit than the Hornady football style. Resulting “smoother” reset of neck tension after sizing. And I use a decapping die at times in batches of brass to clean before sizing and never found that to help the stiffer/stickier upstroke upon FL sizing.

I also brush the inside of the case neck. It’s unbelievable how much this helps.

My process is

Decap with a decaping die
Tumble in ss media
Anneal
Resize, no expander in the die
Run the neck through a mandrel
Tumble to clean off any lube
Trimming/chamfer
Prime
Power
Seat the bullet

I personally don't resize dirty brass, I don't want my dies scratched up on the inside.

Almost exactly the same:

1. Decap with universal decamping die.
2. Clean primer pocket
3. SS Tumble in tartaric acid and dishwashing liqued solution.
4. Anneal every 3d time.
5. Nech or fullsize. My expander buttons have either been polished silk smooth or replaced with carbon expander buttons. Obviously DG rifles -FS and targed and PG rifles neck sized.
6. Trim and chamfer. I put some honing oil and ATF mixture on the Forster trimmer.
7. Wash in warm water an soap and dry
8. Prime
9. Powder
10. Bullet
11. SHOOT!!!!!!!!!

Personal opinion, I anneal every time. I want my brass in the same condition every time.

I don't neck size either, by FL resizing my brass is always in the same condition (no worries about stuck cases either).

Generally I play a different game, one that involves shooting longer distance. My SDs are usually sub 5fps for 10 rounds. I'm also shooting groups below .5moa with is my goal. Most of my match rifles, if it can't do better than 3/8moa @ 100 the barrel comes off.

How do you anneal please? Do you have a set up or do each by hand?

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.
