.375 H&H for Elephant???

I never followed up on this thread last year. I did indeed bring both my 375 and 416. Ended up using my 375 for everything. The elephant went down with a single brain shot. The 300gr CEB solid went through her head and out her neck. She melted to the ground and never moved another muscle. The cape buffalo was also shot through the brain, due to that being the only shot I had in thick cover. That was done with a 300gr TSX. So yes, the 375 will do it all. Not that very many people doubt that by now....

I have another trip to Zimbabwe planned for 2023. Tuskless Elephant and Cape Buffalo are back on the menu. This time I'll be bringing my R8 with both 458 and 375 barrels. I'll use the 458 on the elephant and buffalo. But, that's more because I want to, rather than feeling I need to. Just want to shoot something big with a 458. But if I'm caught with the 375 barrel bolted on, and opportunity comes along, I'll still be covered very nicely.
Can I ask if the CEB solid shot to the same POI as the 300g TSX? Also what velocity were they doing. Reason for asking is with my 375 the 270g solids shot 4 inches away from the 300g TSX so I’m looking to find a solid that matches POI better

I don’t know about Toby, but my Model 70 shoots the 300 grain CEB solids and the 300 grain TSXs in the same spot. 2600 fps

Good question. Yes, both loads shot together very closely. I used Barnes Vortex 300gr TSX factory loads, and handloaded 300gr CEB solids. The velocity of the TSX load was right on 2550 fps. I simply loaded my CEB bullets to the same velocity, and the POI is the same.

So we can count on it living with him that long...
Then she'll be coming around the kitchen counter for a photo op! :E Lol: :A Stirring: :A Tease:

At what distance are these references being made please.

I ask because at fifty yards everything is bloody similar in the .375. At 100 yards and 200 yards it's not that far apart allegedly as long as one follows the age old velocities. Shooting of elephant is done quite close by my study so I'm trying to understand the different datums being used to get 4" off vs. same POI vs. same POI.

My shooting was at 75 yards. I wouldn't shoot at an Elephant at that distance, but having a solid that shoots in the same group with your softs is definitely a good thing.

My 375 was sighted in dead on at 100yds as I was hunting buffalo and plains game. Did take a zebra at 275 with this setup.

Now that I'm hunting both a bull and a cow elephant this time, the subject is even more pertinent. I'm contemplating buying a 416 Rem Mag barrel for the R8, instead of bringing both 375 and 458 barrels and ammo. That would be a compromise between the two calibers, and would work on everything I plan to shoot. Also would simplify my choice as well.

Sounds like a great idea to me! Simpler is sometimes a lot better!

The 416 is a great in between. Easier to handle than the 458 and hits harder than the 375.
my personal favourite caliber

A 416 Remington will be an excellent choice.

The 375 is the legal minimum for Elephant, to your question yes it will work. Would it be my choice hunting Elephant however, no.

375 h&h works. I shot my bull in the ear 40m away and it dropped immediately.

Didn't they drop your last .416?
No. And you do have a point!
Laying odds it sees the kitchen coun... auction block soon.

Yes sir. They broke the front sight off. I was able to get a new sight insert, but that gun has since found a new home. Can you believe that!?
I now have my R8 in 375 and 458, and two Sako 85s in 375 and 416 Rigby. Those 4 rifles are all my remaining DG caliber rifles at the time. So, for now, I'm either taking the R8 with both barrels, or simply the Sako 416 Rigby by itself. I have two elephants and a Buffalo on license for my 10 day hunt, so I doubt very seriously I'll have any time for hunting smaller game. Sure, the odd PG may pop up here and there, but I have no intentions of curtailing my Elephant or Buffalo hunt in order to shoot a Kudu or similar.
I have an RMR and two scopes sighted in for either combo I decide to take, both in QD mounts, so I'm covered no matter what I decide.
