My wife and I just got back from a 14 day trip with the amazing and talented Matthew Maartens Safaris in KZN, South Africa! Matt Is one of the most competent and excellent people I’ve ever hunted with and that list Is getting pretty long now! Matt had every detail of the hunt fine tuned and planned out to perfection! Matt and his people work Incredibly hard to make sure you have the best time of your life: safe transportation, phenomenal hunting areas, awesome & abundant food/meals, top shelf hunting skills, exceptional communication before, during, and after the hunt, and the accolades go on and on!
Every day was special and had unique happenings that you can only experience while hunting. We had daily sightings of Zebra, Nyala, Impala, Kudu, Giraffe, Warthog and frequent sightings of Rhino, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Bushbuck, Duiker, Sable, Springbok, Wildebeest and we even got to hear lions roaring to each other and saw a Leopard in the daylight twice!
It's tough to sort out all the best photos to represent the hunt properly but I picked a few of the best ones of the actual hunt. My 2 rifles: Custom 30 Nosler w/suppressor & 205 Berger EH; Kimber Talkeetna 375 H&H w/300 Gr A Frames (shot Cape Buffalo and Zebra).
Thank you Matt Maartens for the time of our lives and for my wife going along to experience “This is Africa!” It was super fun to be together to share this great adventure!
The Cape Buffalo was a dream day (day 5 of the hunt) and one of the best days hunting I've ever had anywhere - it started first thing in the morning with a super old Bushbuck harvest followed by a Warthog and a Leopard sighting, and then the Buffalo. The Buff was along the river in some deep grass. At about 75 yards, I had a shot with my Kimber 375 H&H and tried to hold as low as I could but ended up hitting him right where the high shoulder meets the spine. He dropped at the shot and began to bellow. It didn't sound like a death bellow so we pushed on to get some more shots. At about 20 yards, he was still down and I was able to hit him solidly with 2 more shots. We got closer and put one more in the heart just to make sure he was done! That was as exciting as anything I've ever done and I'm afraid I am hooked on Buffalo!!! He had huge bosses and was 43" wide - a really big old buffalo for the Zululand area I'm told.
I'm sure thankful for this site and the incredible wealth of knowledge of members here. I continue to read posts every day where I learn more about guns and hunting - my life's passion! Cheers to all of you who are headed to Africa soon!
