Whats stronger, direct mount or pic rail?

Ok I have the VX5 2x10 for my 460WBY and I prefer the simple cleaner on of direct mount scope rings/bases but I've read a few places claiming that pic rails then rings are stronger than direct mounting. With the supposed 99ft lbs of recoil I don't want to chance anything especially possibly stripping the screws. So is there an actual better way to mount a scope or is it just personal preference? Thanks for any info
