Vehicle Information Zambia

My cousin, John Bosetti M.D. and his wife, Nancy Jameson M.D. founders of Eye Surgeons International are expanding the Zimba Eye Hospital in Zimba, Zambia. Their plan is to begin construction sometime next year. They plan to purchase a vehicle suitable for travel to local villages as well as Livingston, and Victoria Falls. My suggestion was a Land Cruiser, but I told him I would ask for input from members of this forum. The vehicle will need to be capable of transporting medical equipment as well as people, as safely and comfortably as possible.

Also looking for recommendations for dealers, and any issues with purchasing, licensing, and/or ownership.

If they have a Zambian non profit it will be no problem with registration, please do not register in a local persons (who may or may not work for the organization) name. If they are not set up in Zambia it can be a problem registering a vehicle in their name without a work visa. I finally gave up.

And of course, the number one vehicle would be the Land Cruiser

Tough to beat a Land Cruiser. I've owned several of them, we gave my wife's 2003 to our son a few years ago and it's still running strong. I sold my 1994 when we bought the 2003. I had an FJ40 back in the 80's - wish I had never sold it.

Depends what cruiser you are looking at....suv type ie prado or full size GX or VX... cruiser troop carrier type.....cruiser double cab ...etc etc....Depends on how much you will be wanting to transport...

I haven't a clue with a non profit whether they allow you to buy the vehicle duty free new....if they do it will get a lot cheaper by many thousands of dollars.....new vehicles here are expensive with the duty....

An suv from what I see....problem with the suv type you aren't going to carry that much in reality....the cruiser troopy has a bigger cargo area ..so if want an suv sort of vehicle be good....it really just depends on what they are going to be lugging around kit wise ...and how delicate it is.... I would go for the cruiser double cab....but then I am probably slightly biased....

Have seen the pickups...but haven't a clue of their names.....there are a few around here...but honestly not really seen that many at all...

I work for the largest medical INGO.

We mainly use Land-Cruisers HZJs in African non-urban settings.

The 78 is the most versatile, you could carry 11 people, or have the whole back to carry large loads or even turn it into an ambulance like we do by placing an stretcher.

Prado is a softer car. So are the Hilux. Nothing ever beats the series 70 from Toyota for heavy duty wirk and endurance. Period.

Looks like I might have to schedule a trip to Zambia to help him decide, and maybe throw in a hunt while I'm there.
