Steiner reticle choice for Buffalo

Regarding the OP, how about the KC-1 reticle? Much similar to the Trijicon MOA Segmented Circle.

In April, I was using a Trijicon Credo HX with a 1-8 power range on my buffalo hunt. My PH got us in close between 15Y - 40Y on our stalks. On one of the closer stalks, I thought I needed to zoom out the 1X power. Based on those instances, how many people actually use anything below 3X? My experience was that power range looked very wide angle and I had troubled identifying depth of field and objects. To me, I would want my low power range to start around 3X. Do any members find 1X - 3X range useable?

I have the S&B Exos 1-8 on my go to DGR rifles and generally am good with the CC mode (close combat) which is a true 1X. I have cranked it up to 8, but not for dangerous game.

On my last African hunt in Limpopo next to Kruger National Park using my CZ 416 Rigby with Leupold Vari XIII 1.5-5x20mm 30 mm illuminated red dot, I left it on 1.5X for everything- buffalo, kudu, warthog and impala but ranges did not exceed 100 yards.

And the surroundings did not look wide angle (not quite fish eye) and the lowest settings? I dialed down but the surroundings look strange so I dialed up to 2.5X to 3X and the world as I saw it returned. Thinking about a Trijicon Credo HX in 2.5-10 with a duplex but it’s has a 56mm objective. Possibly a Luepold VX-5 in 2-10x42 with a firedot. My eyes like the green reticles though.

Yes, because I think field of view is important, and the higher settings just don't have it. Talk to PH's who tell stories about clients not being able to find the animal in the scope.

For DG, I always keep it on the lowest setting especially when shots are 50 yards or less or in thick brush although I admit on that last hunt for some of the plains game like Impala and kudu that were maybe pushing 100 yards, I would have liked to increased the power up a bit from 1.5X but didn’t really have time to fiddle with the scope and it really wasn’t necessary.

14 power on a 458 win......... :E Hmmm:

4 - 16 x 45mm EuroOptics Replacing 2 - 12 x 45mm it will be in my hunt report. I shot my cull cow buff last 3 minutes of natualtical twilight before dark. The scope was set at 12 power to clearly see and mark my POA on her shoulder to shoot. The buff was 70 to 80 yards from us. One shot and she was down. The second shot, insurance shot, at ~10 yards with the scope on 2 power.

Both 500 grain Hornady bullets, 1 each DGX and DGS, through the shoulder destroying the heart.

PppppppppppIf you enlarge the photo you will see a white spot (DGX) over a red spot (DGS), those are 458WM entrance holes

I'm also upgrading my binoculars from 10 x 40 to 14 x 42.

Patrol 6 fire dot is in the mail.
It's crazy how many low power variable optics are on the market and so few make good hunting scopes. I almost ordered a mark 3 because I liked the roll knov illumination. But ultimately the 6 power and clean fire dot were top priorities on this scope. I have a vx6 with the push button and it works OK. Much better than nightforce push button for illumination.
