Whats the story? Thats a quick video with the Rhino on the ground. Did the poachers get caught? Was the rhino shot?

HELL, WERE THE POACHERS SHOT?

Well I have been on lots of Rhino poacher patrols & caught a few, never had even one in day light & never ever had children any where near the place !

Something is very different here, maybe helping a Vet to stabilise one, fitting it out with tracker or patching up a injuryed animal ?

I was thinking the same when I saw the children that close. Were they in a town?

Sidebar stated backing the people working to save a Rhino after a brutal encounter.
More info would be great.

Marc Jansen to the rescue!

I talked to Mark last weekend and he was headed into the bush for several weeks on an Elephant hunt…
He told me he would give a call when he got back into camp so I will ask for all the details then…
Regardless one more Black Rhino safe! And safe due to the work of hunting conservation!!!
This is a big win for all of us here on AH!

So Mark just finished a two week Elephant hunt yesterday and gave me a call. This is what he shared with me about the Black Rhino rescue…
While on the Elephant hunt Mark received a call that there was a wounded Black Rhino that looked to be shot and he was asked if he could go in and help it. Mark wasn’t sure he could at first because he had clients and their families with them but the clients wanted to help the Rhino and told Mark to help it and they would suspend their hunt.
Mark coordinated a Veterinarian and a helicopter to come out and assist. The helicopter darted the Black Rhino and then Mark took the Veterinarian, clients and their families in to the Rhino and Mark assisted the Vet to clean and patch up a gun shot wound. They expect a full recovery!
The Rhino was shot during a full moon over water. It was shot low in its brisket area and ran off. The poacher was not able to get another shot off and the poacher escaped without being seen.
Again what a big win for Rhino conservation by the hunting community!

This reminds me of a request I got from one of Zimbabwe Parks wardens in the mid-80’s. I’d helped them out in 1983 with a new computer for the Matetsi Research Office and they came back a few years later to ask for some low light red dot sights (aim points at the time) for their anti-poaching crew. They explained that when tracking ivory or Rhino poachers they’d often come upon them at dusk or even after dark when the poachers were camped for the night. They requested some Aimpoint sights as they felt it’d help them in shooting during very dim light. I sent 3 Aimpoints over and the price I asked in return was to let me know when they’d killed some poachers with the use of those sights. It didn’t take that long after they’d received the sights to send me a note that the sights worked well and they’d succeeded in shooting some poachers and recovering some ivory.

I always thought that was an opportunity for practical conservation in action.

Had an excellent classifieds transaction with JoninCO. A truly honest and standup member. I wouldn't hesitate at all to deal with him again. Thanks, J!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
