Rifle and ammo match in RSA

I am taking my own rifle on my next safari. I understand you can’t bring ammo that doesn’t match your rifle. My question is, my rifles have custom barrels that don’t have the caliber stamped on them. Will this be an issue?

1. Why don’t your custom barrels have caliber markings on them?

2. Does your rifles have the caliber markings on the receiver? Or Any other location on the firearms?

This could be the beginnings of a bad hunt. Confusing ammo and rifle.

1. Since it is a custom barrel, it has to be installed and chambered. The barrel maker doesn’t know what the end cartridge (just bore diameter) will be. Even if he did stamp it, when the barrel is installed, the stamp could end up in an unreadable position concealed by the stock.

2. No markings concerning caliber on receivers, as most manufacturers put them on the barrel because the receivers are chambered/barreled in many different calibers.

If you are going to confuse your own rifles ammo, a stamped barrel is probably not going to help.

They will most likely look at the caliber of your rifle and make sure it matches your paperwork. Besides that, it’s just good practice to have the caliber stamped on the barrel.

When the gunsmith chambers or rechambers the barrel he should stamp, or re stamp/ mark the barrel with the proper caliber(s).

Good example would be the 458 since some like to ream the chamber from 458WM to 458 Lott.

458 Win Mag / 458 Lott or by polishing out the Win Mag and re stamping Lott.

If you are going to confuse your own rifles ammo, a stamped barrel is probably not going to help.

I bought a NIB Smith &Wesson (IIRC) 1000(?) 12 gauge shotgun that I thought was chambered in 2 3/4" and 3"; the same as my other three 12 gauge shotguns. I had only brought a partial box of 3" shells with me. It was only chambered for 2 3/4" . I found out the hard way on an early morning turkey hunt 2 hours away from home and an hour away from the nearest ammo store that didn't open up for another half hour after my arrival.

Beautiful S&W shotgun sold or traded it a week later.

Take it to a gunsmith and have them stamp/engrave the barrel with the caliber. When I had my 375H&H rebored to 404J the gunsmith removed the 375H&H marking and replaced it with 404J. I expected that and also assumed it was standard industry practice.
