Request for .275 Rigby/7mm Mauser Load Data

Would anyone be so kind as to share load data with which you have had good success with hunting plains game?

I realize that is a broad category of various size animals, but I would appreciate data for various size projectiles you may have used.

I currently have stock of: 139g Hornady SP Interlock; 160g North Fork SS; and 175g Hornady ELD-X, and am open to getting other bullets.

If the load uses H4350 that would be even better as I have quite a bit of it. I also have quite a few Remington 9 1/2 and Winchester WLR, and CCI BR-2 large rifle primers so loads using these primers would be ideal since large rifle primers are difficult to get.

For reference, my rifle had a 22” barrel with a 1:8.66 twist.

The iron sights are regulated for the factory Hornady .275 Rigby bullet, which I have discovered can be reproduced with: Hornady 139g SP Interlock; 47g H4350; CCI 200 large rifle primers; OAL 3.180”; 2,680fps.

However, I have a scope on the rifle, so I would like to develop a load for a heavier bullet that is more suitable for larger PG and then sight in the scope for that projectile.

Thanks ya’ll!

I took a shortcut my friend even though I am a staunch reloader…I sent my Rigby 275 cases and Partition 175 grain bullets to Hendershots and they reloaded for me targeting 2500 FPS. They shoot clover leaf for me at 100 yards with my Rigby HS in 275 Rigby

I have been working with my No.1 RSI 7x57 a lot lately. It’s the medium size rifle I want to take to Africa for my PG hunt. I like and want to take the classic Hornady 175gr RN. So far two loads I have found have been great….45.5 R-17 and a CCI200 for about 2520fps and 47.0gr R-17 and Fed 210 at 2610fps. A .050” jump seems to work great. 45.5gr of IMR-4350 works well also, it’s a little slower at 2440-ish.
A Speer 160gr Hot-Core over 47.0gr of R-17, CCI 200 gives around 2680fps
I’m also playing with 175gr HAWK bullets, 160 and 175gr A-Frames, and just got some 160gr Speer Deep Curls
It seems like the A-Frames don’t want to be pushed hard at all. That’s what I’ve noticed so far. And that goes for my (300gr) 375 H&H also. The A-Frames shot better at slower speeds.
I really like the 7x57 and really want one built in a LH M70 action

Try the 160gr Nosler Accubond on top of VV N550 with your CCI200 primers.
Work up your load with the less expensive 160gr Ballistic Tip and then fine tune with the Accubond.
They have the exact same specs, so they fly the same 99% of the time.
The Nosler OAL is a good place to start.

Obviously.... Work up your own load to safe pressures in YOUR rifle.
Start at 42.0gr and slowly work up until you're happy or you hit pressure.

I load for a modern action 7x57 with the above bullet, powder and primer combo.
My most accurate result is with 46.0gr of N550 at 2730fps from a 600mm barrel.
This load is constantly around 1/2"-3/4" off the bench

It's an excellent plains game load for the old 7mm up to and including kudu and Blue Wildebeest.
I would also use it for eland in a pinch, but your shot placement needs to be top class.

I'm a bit late into this discussion. I have found I like the Barnes TSX 140 grain in the 7-08/7x57. Good accuracy and I don't have to worry about a bullet not being tough enough at close range for bushvield work and is good if you need to reach out. My daughter used that bullet to take a zebra stallion with one shot at about 125 yards. I would not have trusted a eldx to have worked with her quartering shot. Nothing wrong with the ELDX, I just like tough bullets up close. But I don't have the experience with the ELDX up close.

However, the 150 TTSX would be excellent too or an Oryx 156 grain bullet. I personally favor the 156 as a "compromise". Not that a Norma Oryx is ever a compromise.

Worth noting the original 7x57 was designed for a 175 grain bullet at relatively low velocity. I believe (but may be wrong) that Rigby introduced the idea of the lighter (140 gr) bullet at a higher velocity. All of which is said in defense of the 175 gr A-Frames -- at optimal velocity (which at the moment I can't !@#$% recall...) they shoot great for me in my Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 275.
