So, Lana asked me to help her with the garbage.
We open the entry door about to step into the garage and encounter this Timber rattler (canebrake rattler).

I killed it with a stick and had an empty clorox jug and slid it down in it before I thought about what I was doing.

A few minutes later I thought it'd nice to skin it and salt out the hide.
when I took it out of the jug, though, the skin had already rotted in that 7 or 8 minutes.
there was still a couple ounces of clorox in the jug.

Oh well. Just thankful it showed up when it did.
An hour earlier my 18 month old grandson was running around all in the garage and by the flower bed at the garage entrance.
a 1.5-2 foot rattler can be more deadly than an adult sometimes. .

I reached under our back steps a couple years back and got nailed by a copperhead. 3 days later, after 4 courses of anti venom they let me out of the hospital. I took the tread off the back step and killed that bastard (he was still there). I hate them!

Glad you did d not step on that SOB.

That kind of story makes me appreciate our winters.
We have so few that they are protected.

Not a rattlesnake, but almost stepped on one of these in Argentina earlier this year hunting stag. There are 2 of the buggers in this picture. I ended up killing 4 of them on this trip!

When I was high school we hunted them a lot. They would come out onto the paved roads in early evenings for the heat in the asphalt. Would also find them occasionally when working in the wheat or hay fields. Never got bit by one but sure had lots of fun chasing them.
I still have a mason jar full of rattles somewhere at my parents house.
