Royal you are right......I would want back up on a buff as well. Shot placement being all important on the big guys I've seen video of elephant going down to one shot.

Without back-up, I would agree. But if the PH is comfortable with it (and I know many would be, some may not) I see no issue. Now is it for me? Nope. But I see nothing wrong with it. Maybe the PH is a little quicker to put a shot in knowing the client won't have a quick second shot? I guess that would depend on both the PH and what he thought of the first shot.

Probably depends on what the buff does as well!

The .375 Ruger and .416 Ruger intrigue me, as I think that they have the potential to be more popular than they are. However, they are currently proprietary cartridges, and can be difficult to obtain due to the fact that you have only one company making ammo for them, and only one company making rifles chambered for them (limited options). Also, being newer cartridges, there isn't exactly a large amount of loading data out there currently. With all this to consider, this is one reason that I chose the .375 H&H over the .375 Ruger.

That is an impressive group (IMHO) that you shot with the .416! I hope I can shoot my .375 that accurately some day (both at targets AND game!). Good luck on your upcoming elephant hunt.....I look forward to a report and photos! Those are impressive holes in that target from the .458 Lott......out of curiousity, have you tried shooting .458 Win mag from it?

On a side note: Royal, didn't you recently start reloading? Did you use any of your handloads on your last safari? If so, how did they work for you? Feel free to shoot me a P.M. if you don't want to hijack the thread.

16 Gauge I have not fired the 458 mag round through the Lott but understand it could be less costly.

Trust me I'm just so excited about the elephant hunt that is coming up the last week of August. I'm walking anywhere from 3.5 to 7.75 miles at least four days a week to get ready for the hunt. Sometimes I'm walking once a day and others a morning then an evening walk.

I'll go back to the range with both rifles a couple of times over the next eight weeks!

Just getting back to this. I did start handloadimg, but did not use any on the trip.... I need to get back to it and just haven't had the time. I've got to get a load done over the summer though as I want to use some of the 200 grain partitions I have for elk this fall. Where I hunt out shots will be 100 yards or less, so they should make some pretty good medicine.

I would run a KickEez 1 1/8" Magnum pad on it. I'd also put a 14 oz Graco mercury tube in the buttstock. It'll fit the hole for the stock bolt without much fitting required. Better balance and less kick. I put one in my .450/.400 #1 and like it a lot, for both reasons

Check that: the KickEez Magnum is 1 3/8", which was perfect for my Lott RSM, since I wanted more LOP. Running the Leupold FXII fixed 2.5x with 5" eye relief and a 14 3/8" LOP is perfect for me...especially with the "gentle caress" that the Lott is known for You can have the stock shortened or use a shorter KickEez if that's too long for you.

I don't like Limbsaver pads because the damn things "melt" and stick to soft rifle cases.

What you call a "recoil reducer" I'd call a recoil pad...the reducer is the heavy thingy Anyway, good luck with your #1 in .458 Lott. That's a lot o' cartridge for that rifle design! Don't get me wrong; I have #1's in .450/.400 3", .405 Win. and .45-70. I love 'em; but the Lott's a different critter!

Shutter you are exactly right. Compared with a 45-70, which I have in a Marlin, the Lott is from another planet. And you are correct it's a recoil pad that I got.

CAustin, I wasn't trying to be a smart aleck...I reread my post and it sounded like I might've been; but no. Anyway, for a very few bucks, that Graco device shoved into the hole in your #1's buttstock may just make a big difference. I'm putting one in my Ruger RSM Lott. Good luck!

You should fully expect an elephant to go down in one shot. The brain shot is the primary shot of choice... Good idea to put in another one or two in case you stunned him... But a single shot would seem to me to be much more appropriate on elephant than buffalo.

Yes your 416 full of solids should do just fine! Glad you were able to study so much... you'll likely have a tall Africaaner wispering fine details into your ear as well

Yes sir it was an excellent tutorial.
By the way the elephant went down dead with one 416 Ruger shot. Then I was instructed to put two more in......one immediately and then another about three minutes later. The beast never moved after the fall from the first shot.

I thought that was the case.
I spoke with that member over the phone a few times and I thougth he mentioned something about you and #1 in 458LOTT.
Really good guy.
Sold him one of my rifles as well.
