Potable drinking water concerns?

@Tex .416 - I really liked your cure for diarrhea “eating charcoal from the Fire”!! Assuming the charcoal is No longer ‘red hot’ —— it still sounds like a toss up ie: should I tolerate the diarrhea or EAT CHARCOAL??
It is so much easier to just pop a couple of the Pepto-Bismo tablets than waiting for the fire to cool off.
A package of them is the first thing that goes into my overnight bag for any and all trips

Yes, I do the same. My post was just sharing info for when caught in a pinch and there is a need to improvise.

@JimP - in Africa the “Imodium” I brought with me was Highly Valued by my PH and the Gov’t Agent assigned to our Safari (both came down with diarrhea that week)…the Gov’t Agent was so appreciative that I think he’d have allowed me to ‘take a Black Rhino” if I wanted to…

People don't realize how much something like that is worth until it is needed.

I was coming out of a hunting area years ago when nature called. I found a suitable bush and did my business, big mistake. For the next 3 miles I would take a hundred or so steps and have to go again. I quickly used my daily allotment of bum fodder and was thinking of pulling dollar bills out of my wallet.

The next morning I stopped at a store and picked up some Kopectate or whatever it was and even when I thought about passing gas I would take a drink of it. I was plugged up for the rest of the hunting season.

Ever since then I have something in camp or a few pills in my pack to take care of thing.

@JimP - could you please just clarify exactly what you mean in your 3rd paragraph where you mention when you “thought about passing gas” you “would take a drink of it” ? After reading it a few times —- I started feeling a bit queasy myself !

Lifestraw. I never leave for the bush (Alaska/Africa) without it. When I was mushing I even used it after heating up dog rations that were in vac-sealed plastic packs. Nice warm drink that tasted like… hot water.

Bottled water is just part of the logistics. Many times there will be cases of it in the truck to bring into the kitchen, etc. One of the sickest I got was on my first ever short layover in Istanbul. I rented a room to get a quick rest/shower. I used the sink water to brush my teeth but didn't drink any. Then I read that the whole city was protesting the water quality at that time. That was pretty rough and I still had a 12 hour flight in coach with a wrecked stomach. Now I take some simple meds when flying into Africa and it seems to help settle in quickly to the local food/drink.

Never had an issue with there not being bottled water or enough of it. I typically have some water purification tablets in my “travel pharmacy” and a life straw just incase. Got the runs for a few days in Namibia, likely from brushing my teeth.

This was my bath while Elephant Hunting in Zim (ironically at the time this thread started). Didn’t have a second thought about the cleanliness of the water, but crocodiles were definitely a thought/concern when bathing at night.
