P14 DG rifles

I'm wanting to build a 404J. My degenerating shoulder is maxed out at 415 Rem Mag with muzzle break.
In my mind 1903 Springfield is a sweeter action than either 98 Mauser or P14/1917. Almost cycles itself. Unfortunately, finding aftermarket stuff can be difficult. You'd likely need to have custom 404J bottom metal made for 1903. That wouldn't be cheap. Myers makes 3-position Model 70 safety/shroud for 1903 but twice the price of similar for 98 Mauser by Parkwest (if I recall correctly Myers safeties for 1917 are even more expensive). Of course 1903 doesn't require the extensive carving to remove military sight crap on 1917 receiver.
 
There was an outfit in Montana, Gantry, I think who has a 3-position m70-type safety for 98's. I tried to buy one during Obama's 2nd reign and they said that due to the export-tax/licence fee, they could not shit to Canada. At that time, it was $189.00 US.
 
That might have been it. Sounds familiar.
I see there was a mis-spelling in my post. Should have been ship, to Canada, not the other word.LOL
 
I have a full custom 500 A-Square built on a p14/p17 action. I love it. It does have a replica Hannibal stock that’s full synthetic and the rifle overall weighs 12.2 lbs unloaded. Shoots so smooth. I also have a rebuild/repair kit for the p14 action as well. Came with the rifle from my gunsmith. Those actions are very hard to repair BUT there are kits especially for them, so the fear of having an obsolete action is eliminated. Advanced Boyou Weapon System out of Louisiana built mine for me late last year.

For years they have been "sold out" of all safeties but Siamese Mauser and Remington 700.
 
This happened under Obama's increased export licenses as near as I could find. If that "system" has changed, it would be news to me.

That all depends on one's own perspective. Some.people think all vehicles should be government regulated/governed to not exceed 50 mph.
Every now and then when passing a bunch of slow movers, my trucks governor stops the wonderful excelleration and won't go any faster. It is a Kentucky 350 Ford 6.7 diesel. The governed speed is just barely set at 3 figures.

Why would you change the safety on a M17? The standard safety has excellent function, it locks the sear and the bolt handle, is immediately under the thumb and the forces required to activate it are excellent.

I wouldn't change it but apparently some folks prefer the position two for "added safety." In my opinion anyone who doesn't know enough to point the gun in a safe direction while cycling live rounds with safety disengaged is too stupid to be handling guns. I have a 3-position Model 70 safety on my 98 Mauser and rarely if ever remember to use position two when unloading the rifle. I could also open the floorplate to unload it ... if I wanted to pick dented cartridges out of the dirt. I installed Model 70 style because it is the most convenient scope relief safety to install and employ.
 
Thats why I wanted one. I usually have one or two in the magazine box, with the bolt closed on an empty chamber when hunting.
When guiding, rifle carried in both hands or slung, bolt closed on loaded round, safety employed.
 
When I'm solo hunting deer or elk, my rifle has one in the chamber and safety engaged. Same for dangerous game and my 98 Mauser. But hunting plains game with PH and tracker, the chamber is empty. I don't totally trust the aftermarket scope relief wing safety on my Springfield. I'm presently in the process of changing that gun to Model 70 safety.

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.
