For DG of all kinds I prefer a red dot on all rifles, including bolt action rifles.

I vote for a 1-6 or 8 scope with illumination. A reflex is 0-100 m and a variable scope is 0 to 300 m. Far more versatile.

If you need the extra 200m range for DG, you are hunting it wrong.

That's crazy. I think you had long hair though. We said a quick cheers at the lounge. You had been on a much longer safari than 10 days if I remember correctly.

In my opinion too much emphasis is placed on gear when outfitting DGR and not enough emphasis on technique. Over the last sixty years I have shot quite a lot of running game with 3x scope (or variable scope set at 3x) and killed them dead. And some very close. Shot this gemsbuck incoming full tilt in the heart as she broke out of an acacia thicket <30 yards. And then again as she ran by at 12 yards, also through the heart. I called both shots and that's where they hit when we rolled her over for a look.

Also called the shot on my 2022 buffalo on the run.

This buck dropped in his tracks on the run. One shot exactly where expected. The 3-9x Nikon on my Springfield may have been set at 5x for that one.

And this coyote on the fly at 50 yards the following year.

The difference is not the scope but my instincts developed from shooting thousands of rounds skeet and clays every year. And a lot of birds.

Great pics!! And I am with you on clays shooting. I would have nicer rifles if I didn't spend as much on sporting clays

Yes ... but SHOOT LOW GUN. Shooting clays and skeet high gun won't teach you much. Skeet stations one, seven, and eight are best practice for incoming dangerous game charges.

If you look close at the bull in the skinning shed, you can see entrance hole at the bottom of the dark vertical stripe on his shoulder.

Yep. If you can instictively hit a tiny clay target zipping in at you less than ten yards with a pattern twelve inches wide, then odds are pretty good you will be able to instinctively put a slug somewhere in the brain of a charging elephant. To make station eight better practice for dangerous game charges: 1) inset water balloon into pants, 2) smash balloon when shouting "pull", 3) and then try to shoot clay before it gets past you.

Haha I have always wanted one of those buffalo moving target setups. Maybe eventually I’ll put one together.

But it’s gonna be hard to replicate the mud butt sensation a charge would probably cause in reality

It's pretty crummy to admit I am recoil adverse especially when I am 6 feet tall and not slight. But honest is honest. haha

The more they kick, the more I may fluff a shot. And the .404 was not that much more recoil than the .375. The 416 Rem and Rigby on the recoil charts show to be even more than the Jeffery.

Not crummy at all, I too use a 375H&H! I bought a 416 Rigby last year, even with a muzzle brake I got headaches after 6-7 shots, I’ll stick with my 375.

Ended up taking the RMR and mount off. Got some rings coming and I’m trading a coworker the Vortex Razr 1-6 for a VX6 Patrol 1-6 with Duplex.

Should be close to the overall setup most on here suggested.

I have a VX 6 1-6pwr with illuminated reticle on my .375 Ruger and have taken many whitetail and hogs here in the states and plainsgame, buffalo and elephant in Africa. It worked perfectly on shots to about 150yds I don’t think I could have done that with an RMR.
I do have an RMR with a 1 MOA dot on my .416 Rigby and to me it works well out to 100yds for me and that’s about as far as I will stretch it and only on a big target like buffalo and eland.
Go with the variable on the .375 with an illuminated reticle. Just my 2cents.

So what did you settle on for rings and base(s)?

I ended up getting Talley ultralights. It’s what I use on other rifles and they have been good and held zero. They didn’t have ultra low like I normally use so I just got low.

Not going with quick detach rings? Hmmm. If your rifle has iron sights, I would recommend having the option to switch to them if needed. I have Warne QD rings on both my DGR 404J Mauser and my plains game/deer/elk/moose 30-06 Springfield 03A3. Scope can be removed and put in my daypack when hunting rough country or bad weather. If the scope goes haywire, I can switch to irons in a heartbeat. No need to switch guns.

Yeah I though about it but I may just piggy back a low plate on top of the scope and the RMR will be QD with an ADM low mount. This sounds very redneck but it should also put the RMR at a height that I can use Night Vision for passive aiming and smoke some hogs with the 375 at night. haha
