Gifted to me with a collection of knives some years ago by an elderly gentleman. I put away in the top of a closet. He comes to visit this Christmas season and I pull down to go over the knives with him and he tells me this carving (and one more like it) is rhino. I've turned to google with no avail. Can any of you identify? It's not wood or plastic. Thank you in advance.

It has been a long time since I have seen a carving made out of rhino horn. The dark transitioning to amber along with a translucence quality are characteristics of rhino horn as I recall.

The attached photo from a book seems to bear this out as well.

I don't know if there is a legal market for rhino horn carvings these days, but if your carving was in China or Vietnam it might compare favorably with a Holland & Holland Royal, or better.

Are any of the knife handles made out of the same material? Rhino horn knife handles were a prized possession in the Arab world. You might want to check.

Do you know when and where the gentleman picked up the carvings?

Instead of a closet, I would have that displayed front and center of my trophy room. Enjoy!

I'll take the Vortex scope cover you have listed in the Pay it Forward thread.
